Title: Snacking input!
Post by: Blondy40 on June 07, 2010, 12:21:14 PM
Hello everyone. I am just looking at getting some opinions on what everyone does as far as snacking/treats with their chinchillas. I have had my boys for 2 years and all is great..poops are normal. Knock on wood, I have never had a problem. I now have 2 girls and have gone into the same practices with them as I have established over a period of two years with the boys. They are each given 2 snacks an evening...for example...maybe 2 raisins a piece and a rosebud a piece. Of course, they have their daily staples of hay and pellets and water...I am just wondering what others do with their furry fluff balls. I love to spoil them of course and cannot help myself but I know better than to over do. My parents (RIP Dad) always over did feeding with their dogs and they were always well cared for but over weight. I am just curious...The toys I give them all are made of healthy stuff like hay and alfalfa etc. Thank You for your input!  ::silly:: ::)

I use Craisins, Dried Payapa, Dried Pineapple, Hibiscus, and raisins. I personally dont treat mine as much as you do, but yours are obviously healthy, so no harm done. LoneStarChinchillas.com has samples of all these that you can buy.

Thank You for your response. I do have days that I skip snacking because like kids, they get too used to the "good Stuff", they neglect their pellets and staples of their diet....so I monitor closely.....such smart little critters! I have not tried the Craisins yet....that is a different one. :2funny:

i can put a raisin and a craisin in one hand, they will try to take the craisin first everytime, and sometimes, they sneak away with both.. Mine love the craisins, cant say the same for yours tho.

Well I have a treat jar for my boy, and when I shake it he comes running to me (HOW CUTE!).
Inside there are raisins, dandelion drops (treats I bought from a pet store that were recommended to me) and original cheerios.

I usually give him 1 raisin (split it in half and give him one half at a time so he feels like hes getting two lol), and he gets to pick his last treat usually its the dandelion drop.

may i make a suggestion please..

i know different people have a difference of opinion on raisins and sugary things.. but you might want to cut down on how often you give sugar treats to your chins... from everythign i have learned too much sugar can cause health issues and two sugar treats a night is too much...

just wanted to let you know..

some other safe ones.. thyme, mint, oregano, red clover.. rose hips, old fashioned oats  just to name a few.

If everything is perfect why change a thing  ;)

Your chins don't need it. Make or buy chew toys, blocks, apple branches .....etc.
You'll both enjoy those too. ::nod::
