Our new baby seems to have small genitals and her belly feels hard and very full. Is this common or has anyone heard of this. She is now three days old and seems to be healthy otherwise, nursing and jumping around. I am just unsure if she is pooping. Any advice or info?

It is normal for babies to have small genitals the the belly should be rounded, that means it is nursing well. Its a problem when the belly sinks in. It is always a good idea to weigh your kits everyday. That way you can be sure they are not loosing weight.

Sadly we took her to the vet today because the belly was enlarged and I could not find an anal opening, sure enough there was none and they euthanized to prevent suffering. I just feel so bad for my Sam now she has no babies as the other died shortly after birth. She was very heathly jumping around and gaining weight. What a loss.

I am so sorry.

Oh I am so sorry this happened. It's heartbreaking, I had the same thing happen to me, a chinchilla I named Stinker. My thoughts are with you. ::cry222:::

It really sad to heard that....may the kit live in peace...
I would like to know, how often does a kit without an opening anal, and is that no other way around to heal it?? Can some experienced breeders give me an answer.

It isn't common which is why I thought it was just a full tummy. Just like humans, chinchillas can be born with all sorts of birth defects.

I am sorry for your loss.
I have been considering breeding my Sapphire when she gets old enough, but some of the horror stories are making me reconsider. I dont know if i can put a mother through that or not.

Thanks, but breeding is really a serious topic to consider.

Oh no, Im so sorry. It's so hard losing a baby. I lost one at 3 days old, Stinker. She was underweight. My thoughts are with you. ::cry222:::
