I'm sorry, I know that this question has been asked many times but I am unable to find any of the posts on the topic. I have been noticing yellow coloration of my chins' fur around their genitals. I can't recall but it from what I remember it was related to something bad. It seems a little strange that it is happening to my whole herd. Can I take some unscented sanitizing wipes and call it a day or is this something more serious?

its their urine.. i read someplace that if they aren't sitting in there urine it could be a uti, but usually its because they will pee where they sit or lay..ie... like on a shelf..

I did notice that on my beige hers became yellowish when I put in more shelves.
OT: are they trainable to pee only on the shavings down below?

you can train them to use a litter box but will they always use it everytime.. no.. dam little buggars... but they do make life with chinchillas much easier

When you are training them to use a little box I noticed they like it clean. So change the litter box daily, that's what I do. It will helps.

With their current cage, the only portion with pine shavings are their houses. Ill make a small litter box on the bottom portion and see how it goes

mine are mostly good if i don't have the shelf in that came with the FN142.. when i have that in, it is covered with fleece, and they will go on the fleece..i don't if its because i used to use fleece on the bottom of their cage, so they are used to it, or if its just because its not a bare floor.

fleece to line a shelf...theres an idea ::silly::

alot of people use fleece, it can be easy.. i didn't like it for a few reasons.. but i do use it on the fn shelf to hide the plastic.
just make sure if you ever find a hole in it, take it away, but fleece is the only safe material for chinnies.

i can't imagine potty training my chins? is there any techniques to get them to use it? It probably has to begin when they are kits, not full grown adults huh?

its quite easy to do. chins usually pick a place to urinate. find that place, get a litter box [i have a pryex glass oblong] put your bedding in it, and on the very top of the bedding, put the bedding that has urine on top of it.. when you change the bedding from the litter box, just always [until they learn] to put a bit of soild bedding on top of the clean bedding..
