Title: Cage buddies
Post by: smokie on July 29, 2010, 04:52:26 PM
Hi, I had a female chin and was worried she was lonely and got her a female buddy and they love each other to bits.

Then I got a boy and as some will have seen from my recent post I'm now worried that he's lonely as he's kept seperately (right now the two females are asleep on each other and he's just standing around.   :(

I have decided not to get him castrated on advice and not wanting to take the risk but was wondering if I could get him a friend.  Would he fight if I got him a male friend?  I thought they might fight because there's females in the same room (but different cage).  Is this the case?  Or, if I could find one (on the sheer offchance) a rescue neutured female or would he just be a pest to her then as he hasn't been done?

ps why hasn't anyone invented 'chinchilla protection pants' yet???    ;)

If you keep the cages far far apart you might get away with having 2 males in the same cage.

I just had 2 male chins returned after 2 years. They are in my chin room still caged together and my females just had their heats. They never noticed. Maybe because they have never had a female. I sold them as kits and they have been buddies since birth.

I haven't been able to keep males together in the past, but most were full grown when I tried.

If you could get a young male kit to put with your male and move the cages apart and don't let them have any contact with the females you might be OK. Just a might mind you, you just never know for sure until you try.

The question is what if it doesn't work out for any # of reasons, are you prepared to have another cage?
Then you would have 2 single males.
I'd just get him a teddy bear if I were you. ;)

yeah think it's going to be a teddy bear!  i keep them all close together so there probably would be fighting :(

wish i had more space for more rescue chins.

thanks for that.

(it's 2.45am here, guess i better go to bed now!)

Every male I tried to keep together has failed. It's a risk but you can try, just be prepared for them to not get along.

I have two males. I interduced them when they were babies and they love each other but I also don't have any females, so I don't know if that helps or not. I'd try the teddy bear first.

My chin wasn't interested in his first teddy either I had to get him a REALLY REALLY soft teddy before he
'd sleep with it, now he's in love with it and always sleeps with it...hehe he's actually doing that now; talk about adorable.
