Title: Potty training...
Post by: Gil_Mic on September 19, 2011, 07:40:48 PM
Hi everybody!

I have 4 chinchillas - two boys and two girls, in separate cages - and I would like to "potty train" them and finally get rid of the bedding.

How can I do it? Any suggestion? What's the best "strategy"?

Please help me!!!!  :)

Ciao ciao,
Mike

You can place a "litter box" full of shavings in the area of the cage they are already urinating in.  They should continue to go in that area in the box.  Poop will always be everywhere.  There is nothing you can do about that.

Do your girls piddle on the wood ledges themselves? Mine do and I can't figure out to break that. I would love to be able to......

if they pee in multiple places, put pans in all the places they pee in, then after awhile, take one away, then after awhile, take another away, until you are down to one pan.. just fyi, do not rush taking them away.. and when you are down to one pan, if you want it in another area of the cage, literally on move it a tiny bit at a time, and take your time moving it.. otherwise, and i say this cuz i went threw it.., you might have to place it back to where it was to begin with..

How long would you say "after a while" is? Would this be a couple of days?

i would wait more than a few days, i actually dont remember how long i waited, but i do remember it does take time.. try  maybe a week or two.. maybe once you see that they are always using the box, also when you fill the liter pans up, always put some soiled liter on to until they realize what the pain is for.

chins usually always pee in the same place, sometimes there may be a few different places but always in the same place.. at least from what i have seen.. so if there is liter in the cage you will see which spots are wet with urine.. if there is a urine spot "here" then when you take all the litter out and put the pans in, put the liter pan in that exact spot, again, if there are three spots, start with 3 liter pans, .. i hope that made sense, i'm horrible at explaining.

It sounds like your chinchilla is rolling around in its carefresh bedding to the point of getting dry skin. I have to wonder if all signs of it are scattered around the cage. I imagine it will be more noticeable once you get that fleece you ordered.

well since hes relocated due to these horrible storms (they called them rare and "derecho") i put a fleece blanket to line the new cage at my parents..... i think hes a little irritated with me but hopefully he'll get over it and understand hecouldn't stay at home without power.. lol
