Title: Nibbling vs. Chewing on Bedding
Post by: mojito on February 29, 2012, 04:36:48 PM
So I just cleaned Dexter's cage and this time I decided to try Carefresh Ultra. Its very different from his old bedding (Eco bedding) and ever since he was put back in the cage (about 5-10 minutes now) he's been foraging and rolling around in it. He's also been taking a few pieces and gnawing on them. I can't tell if he's actually eating it or just nibbling on it. I've heard carefresh can kill chins since it expands; but its supposed to also be one of the best beddings out there. Is this okay for him to do this?

Check out this thread. It discusses carefresh bedding and other types as well.

I did actually read that a while back; Im just wondering if the first few bites are ok since I'm not sure if he actually ate it or not. He's not eating it anymore; but he loves sleeping on it!

mine used to nibble it too so what i did was use carefresh on the bottom, and then put pine shavings on top. it worked great... however, i use litter boxes, if you have the bottom of the cage filled up, i'm not sure if that wood work cuz it might all get mixed up.

For pee, poo and sleeping on (he likes to sleep and roll in it). I'm now considering making a fleece liner to try out!

Thanks everyone for your help he's not eating it or anything anymore so I'm assuming now he was nibbling, just being a worried chinmom:)

Just watch they don't chew the fleece. If they do remove it. It can cause blockages.
I use fleece for mom and kits, but dads seem to chew or remove it from the house/hut.So when dad goes back the fleece comes out. I tried hammocks way back but they pee in them. Not what I want mine sitting in.
Some are fine with it, just be careful.
