Hello,
My chin Pufy started 2 weeks ago to pee in the room. He even wanted (and partially succeeded) to pee on my bed. I have him since December 2011 and he did not pee outside the cage until now.
Why is he doing this? Is he trying to tell me something?
He is not peeing on the floor but only on the couch or on the bed. I see when he wants to do this because he has some kind of a "dance ritual" before peeing...
Thank you for your reply.

That really is strange. I wonder if it has something to do with a scent he is picking up. I hope someone who knows will comment on this.

Is he around 6 - 8 months old? I don't know a lot about it, but I have heard sometimes chins can be a little too territorial around that age....
I haven't personally had the experience, but there is the odd time, you will here about chins biting spouses of their owners, or snubbing someone else and favoring another person more in the household... there are also sometimes where you hear about chins peeing in certain spots (that aren't for peeing on) and almost seeming to delight in it. It could be his way of marking territory/showing his dominance, by getting his scent on it (urinating).
Now, if he is peeing like a fire hydrant and not stopping peeing, or if his pee is milky white in color, thick, etc... it could be a sign of him having a urinary infection instead. However, they can't really be picky if they have an infection and tend to go wherever, whenever.
However, to me it sounds like a territorial issue. You don't hear of it often with chinchillas. Just the odd one, once in a while.

My girl does that whenever she smells my parent's dog from my clothes and I think it's a defense thing. The females seem to do it a lot. There's no chance Pufy has been sexed wrong? It's easy enough to do because the genitals can look fairly similar.

Thanks for your replies. I guess it's a territorial thing with this little one.
I also think he does this whenever he stays too much outside the cage and he does not want to go inside peeing.
He did not do that in the last 2 days. I think he favors more my wife than me :)
Ill keep an eye on him :)

Positive the chin is a male correct?

Yes, he definitely a male :)

Checked out the ano-genital distance right? The urethral cone on female protrudes like a spigot, which often couses confusion.

Well, the Pet Shop sais he's a male, i see he is a male, the doctor said he is a male :) ... I guess he is a male :)))
