Title: Training.
Post by: Snickerdoodlesmom on June 25, 2012, 08:24:00 PM
I decided to give snickerdoodle more extensive training after he learned the command up ( jump onto my shoulder from my right knee). But I have a few questions: 1. How do you get their attention off the treat in order for them to jump up onto your shoulder? And 2. Do they like verbal praise( such as "good boy!")?

It can take a few weeks before your chin gets over the shock of relocation and gets comfortable enough to do that. He'll probably gain an interest in treats too. Remember only two raisins or equivalent per day or it can be very harmful.

When I clap and cheer for dexter after he does something good (like when I tell him to do something and he does it) he will start popcorning all over the place! We taught him to "jump it" where he runs and jumps off the wall, and if you don't cheer for him now after he does it on his own he will stop and stare at you, and eventually throw something hahaha. So verbal praise does work, but I have also started with treats and slowly went to just praise.

@mojito: that is adorable!!!! What does he throw?
One of the greatest parts in owning a chinchilla is, I believe, the fact that you can teach an old dog new tricks. NIckers is one and has just begun his training, which the little genius is excelling at. <3

He'll throw anything he can get his paws on if something is around him to get your attention, a stick or even poop haha. He loves being the center of attention!
