Title: Combing after pregnancy
Post by: Sweetnessheart on September 23, 2006, 09:51:36 PM
My poor Cinsi has tufts of hair all over her head.  She looks as if she has feathers growing from her scalp.   My question is  -  when to comb chinchillas after they give birth?  I know you wait until 10 days has past before a dust bath, but what about combing?  I know they are tender and the nipples are protruding.  I don't want to cause any harm to her, she has been through enough stress already.

I figure, if need be, I will just comb the top of her head.

::silly::I'd hand-pick or comb only the top of her head or use a lent roller ... maybe her back , if she will voluntarily set still for it, but I would not try combing her in the normal way or anywhere near her teats or underneath ... you might get bit ... if I was her, I would, I would let you know in no uncertain terms that I was not happy with what you were trying to do.
At ten days she and her kits can have dust baths ... that will help with some of the little spikes of hair ... the kits will help also ... as they get bigger, they will groom themselves, each other and even her.   ::nod::
For the grooming, I would give it 6 weeks.

::shrug:: I know Janet, Mia has the same little tufts of hair all over her head too!  It's kind of cute but I feel bad for her.  She really looks like one of those little birds with those feathers that stick up on their heads.   Poor girls, like they didn't have it rough enough with the pregnancy & kit rearing thing huh?  Now they have to look like this!
