Title: salem the magician
Post by: mb30 on November 02, 2013, 02:49:32 AM
This morning i had my back turned trying to get my other chinchilla down from the table when i heard a rustling. I thought itwas salem(the other chin) eating or moving hay around. Much to my surprise this is what i saw when i turned around.
I have no idea how she got up there. Nothing like a high rise sand bath! Haha.

That's hilarious. Who wouldn't want a spa on their roof?

Haha. Im just glad she didnt fall trying to get up there.
Im not sure how she managed it. She must have twisted around from the top shelf inside the cage and pulled herself
up to the top. I never leave the second floor door open unless im in front of the cage but i had to get to the other
chin before she chewed off the rubber buttons on the phones hand set.

OOH! How's that plastic flying saucer working out for ya?

I have one of those and I've tried it with two different chinchillas. Neither of them really took to it. It's about useless unless you hold the base down and it's made of plastic so I'd never want to keep it in my chin's cage where it can be chewed and the pieces swallowed. Not good for rodent insides. I do have a vertical metal wheel with a solid running surface (highly recommended) though and Kulu loves it especially at night. It makes him quieter when I am sleeping because he'll be running on that and not banging around jumping from shelf to shelf. I rigged up a digital counter on it and he'll log around 6,000-8,000 revolutions per day. That's over 1.5 miles. I do recommend getting a wheel larger than 14" but the one I have is good for my 500g male.

I thought of getting one of those but I heard that the horizontal ones are better for their spines?
...
URGH. I *BUILT* a flying saucer from the Ikea wheel instructions on the net... but in just a few months, Popsicle has worn out the bearings on mine and it is making a racket, it's actually been damanged beyond repair... I'll make him a new one tomorrow, but I need a more permanent long term solution...

I don't think you will have a problem if your wheel is larger than 14" with back problems (I think a 14" wheel will work for a chinchilla 500g or less). The flying saucer is an option. You can find a metal one but they are more expensive, take up a lot of room in the cage, and collect a lot of chinchilla poop from what others have said.

This looks pretty good. Not sure if you can find one in the states though
