Being around my mom's parrot and other birds I know that it's easy to get them to do what I call the eye game. That is if you close one eye and leave one open the bird will do the same and also switch sides.
I've been trying this with my chinchilla, Kulu, and although he's not as consistent I am noticing a distinct pattern now and I am convinced that he is playing the eye game. Perhaps after a few more weeks it will become more consistent and conclusive.
It is also interesting because looking him straight in the eyes seems to make him agitated compared to glancing past him. I would be very interested to know if anyone else has observed this kind of behavior.

I did it again this morning and noticed it is more consistent than it was yesterday.

Nice. I shall try this too. I have noticed that looking my less tame chin in the eyes does indeed make her jumpy.
Also, i might just be imagining it, but the same chin will watch my eyes when she is outisde the cage and if i am looking one way and suddenly look another way she will bolt off. That's just with moving my eyes without moving my head.
It happens all the time too.

There is no doubt in my mind now that my chinchilla plays the eye game. He does it about every time now. I think he does it so I stop bothering with it so I set him down when he gets right.
