I live in Newfoundland Canada, a far east in Canada as you can go.The coldest too I think.
I have 28 chins from new borns to 12 years old, though I bought my first one 8 years ago.
I rescued a few that are older then my first.

WOW!  Mine seem so old!  I have 3, CHICO (approx 17yr old), CHRISSY (approx 13yr old) and their little girl BEBE (3 yr old).  All standard grey.  I live in VANCOUVER BC CANADA.  I can trace CHICO back to 1989 with the previous owners he had...but I don`t know past that...who knows how old he could be!  And CHRISSY was bought at a pet store in 1993, so again, I don`t know how far back she could go either.  How do you post pictures here?  I clicked on 'insert picture' and don`t know what to do then...usually something comes up to let me browse my pictures...but nothing...

;)Hi All,  I am finally back!

My name is Joyce (formerly known to some as WML2002 on the Forums) and I live in Virginia with my husband of 21 years and our 2 teen offspring.  We own 25 chinchillas, the youngest is about 4 months old.  Not exactly sure how old the oldest is because I have rescued most of them over the years.  I am not a breeder, but I am proud to announce that we do have our very first pregnant female and she is due next month!  I am so excited and will keep you posted.

Awwwwwww thanks Debbie, it's nice to be back and see you as well.  I cannot wait to see the baby(s) either!  This is my very first litter and as excited as I am, there is some nervousness too!  Mia is about 2 years old, she is a large dark standard grey from Ralph Shoots Ranch.  I got her last year.  She is paired up with a huge light hetero-beige boy!  He is the love of her life, and she his!  What a sweet pair.  I'd post a picture if I could ever figure out how.  We really believe it will be multiple kits at this point based on her size right now and terrific weight gain so quickly.  But time will tell.  RIght now she is 1,000 grams and looks ready to pop.  She is doing very well.  A real sweetheart!

My name is Andrea and my Chin Harvey I believe is only six months old.  He is a standard and the reason I do not know his age is my mom found him at a pet store and we are always rescuing animals from pet shops because we feel bad for them :)

Hi Jo Ann, you are so funny!!!

Hi All,  Jo Ann is just fascinated with this whole thing.  I love you Jo Ann.
My husband & I listened to our "kit(s) to be" heartbeat(s) a few nights ago.  Dr. Mike is a pediatric cardiac anesthesiologist and we are really big on listening to all of the hearts in our chinnie herd.  He uses a special stethoscope designed for preemies/newborns.
So, the other night "Mia, my soon to be momma" came out to visit me and sat quietly on my lap.  I gave her some loose alfalfa hay to munch as a distraction.  I had actually already put the end of the stethoscope in the palm of my hand between my forefinger & middle finger facing upward.  I kind of just let her come over it and sit belly down on my palm.  Mike found the kit(s) heartbeat(s) right away, then I listened.  It was totally amazing to be able to hear these little, very quick heartbeat(s) inside of their momma.  The beats are very soft & really quick, not nearly as strong or loud as mommas, so it is hard to tell how many kits are actually in there at this point!  We'll find out soon enough!
Now keep this in mind.....Mia is a very calm chinchilla and is used to coming out willingly and being handled.   She is very attached to me and trusts me!  So this whole thing works well with her. She is also familiar with a stethoscope. But, some pregnant mommas may not be so complient.  So, if you ever decide to listen to the baby heartbeats inside of momma, make sure you begin very early on to get mom used to a stethoscope.  Do not want to stress her out.  Be extremely gentle and let her belly gently rest on your palm with the head of the stethoscope between your fingers face up and level with the palm of your hand...not sticking up and poking her..  Never poke or probe the belly.  Never chase her around the cage trying to catch her!  Any stress can cause her to abort the babies.  I have a female or two I would never even attempt this with if they were pregnant!!!

Think we should relocate these last 2 posts from Jo Ann & I and begin a new thread?

Now that's way cool Joyce.
I couldn't warrent purchasing a stethoscope for the chins, but I may have reason to purchase now.to hear hear my daughters baby's heart beat. She just found out she is pregnant. :::grins::
Would a regular stethiscope work ya think?

Yes Andrea many of us feel bad for pet shop chins/animals.
It's a fight sometimes not to take them all home.
The thing is when you buy pet shop animals they will replace them with new ones, and we can't buy them all.
I'm of the mind now if I leave them there they won't buy another.
The longer they are there the harder it gets to sell them, and maybe they will not bring in another as they don't sell. ::nod::

Hey there Debbie, "CONGRATULATIONS"!!!!!!!!!!!!  Now that is very exciting!!!!!
Yes, Mike said you would be able to hear a human fetus heartbeat through mom's belly with a regular stethoscope!  But not until a while into her pregnancy.  She can ask her obstetrician when you can hear it with a stethoscope through mom's belly.  Mike thinks it is not until the second trimester.  Maybe end of trimester 2.  That would be very cool to hear, bet it'll bring tears of joy to your eyes!  It would mine!   Let us know how it goes and give us updates on your daughter.

Thanks Joyce,
I've been biting my tongue, but all seems well, at 7 weeks. :blush2:
We've been trying to get her pregnant for a year.
I say we because I would even call the last couple of months, just to remind them of her ovulation :D We've had a ball, and will with the pregnancy. The baby will be the bestest, me a Granny.
She emailed me her positive preg test, well they heard me in town I'm sure. ::silly::
I get teared up now every time I see her.
I had a stethoscope for listening to my kids heart beats.
I have even tried to listen to the chins bellies when pregnant. :D with my ear to her side.

;) Hi FluffBall........ What a small world, I cannot believe you are from Plum!  Me too.  Well actually the street that I grew up on used to be  Plum Boro long ago, but now it is Oakmont!  My family is still there.  Right up by the Oakmont Country Club, good old OCC.  My husband & I actually had to move back for a short period of time for his job and we lived in the Fairways.
Wow, and I am a Magee baby myself.  My dad was a Doctor at St. Margarets.   Any chance you went to Edinboro, Gannon or Pitt too?

;) Well it's great to meet you!  I can't believe your fiance & I went to the same high school.  You & I do have some stuff in common!  Like shopping at the Monroeville Mall huh?  Gosh, only if you feel comfortable, PM me and tell me where your fiance grew up, what area of town and/or street, we may have even more in common!  I probably know his family or something!  Who knows!  Small world.

Hey just curious, how is the chinchilla population around your area?  Is it a popular pet, are there any really good breeders?

Hi I'm from the Sierra Mountains near Fresno, CA. I live at 8000 ft elevation, pretty cool place to live for a girl who grew up near Chicago, IL.  We have 16 chins (+) kits. They range in age from seven to eight years to kits.

his Dad was Howard Scott and his step Mom was Ann Scott
they lived in that green house off of that one main road kinda like the edge of that little oakmont town I am not familiar with that area and can only picture it slightly in my head it had a small porch on it I think that it is painted a different color not sure but it useed to be that ugly army green i think well that is how i am picturing it

I AM PRETTY SURE IT WAS DELEWARE CAUSE ULTON WAS THE ONE THAT HAD THE PURPLE BRIDGE RIGHT WELL THIS IS A VERY SMALL WORLD AND NO CHINS ARE NOT VERY POPULAR YET
