Title: Chinchilla Cataract topical N-acetyl-L-carnosine eye drops
Post by: Chinsight on March 13, 2015, 01:42:36 AM
Just a note to let chinchilla owners know if your chinchilla is developing cataracts there are human / animal cataract eye drops that may help. Vision Clarity Eye Drops. Here's the direct link.

I have a 10 yr old male chinchilla with cataracts in both eyes, one cataract is more advanced than the other, so for the past 2 days I have been applying a drop in each eye twice a day. There is no burning because the PH is so low and he doesn't seem to mind them at all. Hopefully the cataract will start to dissolve soon. I just wanted to put this out there since I was told by my vet that there isn't much that can be done for cataracts and the chins can go totally blind. I was happy to see this alternative to try.

I have heard of ocluvet being used with good results as well. You will have to keep us updated on how your chin does. Is it very costly?

My brother originally bought the drops for my fathers cataracts as an option before surgery. He only used them once or twice and then I saw they could also be used on animals so I started the male chinchilla on them. I think my brother paid $25 a bottle and there are two bottles in each package. The chins eyes look soooooooo much better!!! And he can see better because now he sees me coming with the drops and he runs before he would just sit there. His eyes are much brighter and clearer and so far no side effects that I am seeing.

I'm going to take him to our exotic animal specialist in a couple months when the female (Bebzee) has her tooth spurs filed down again. She usually goes every 3 - 5 months. I'll bring the eye drops and the male (Mouse) and see what the vet thinks about his eyes and using the eye drops on him. I'll update everyone. Oh I didn't know about the Ocluvet eye drops. Thanks for telling me about them. I will bring those up to the vet also.
