Title: Ringworm
Post by: cashew on March 26, 2007, 01:28:02 PM
I took my Chin to the vet today and he has ringworm.  Which explains the hair loss around his nose.  I was given a med to apply for 18 days.

Is there anything else I can do?

I think I remember someone saying I could use the stuff for athlete's feet in the dust bath.  My vet didn't really recommend it but has anyone tried it successfully?

Desenex Athlete's foot powder (1 heaping teaspoon to 1 cup of dust)  But if he gave you a cream I wouldn't recommend the dust bath or you will have a chinchilla covered in paste!  :D

::silly::Ringworm is highly contagious to humans as well as animals ... let your family doctor know you have a problem with your chinchilla!  If not, you may be looking at passing it back and forth between your chin and family members.  Use a good disinfectant every time you handle your chin.

Desenex works great as a prevention and as a medication, but like Jamie said ... not the at the same time as when you are using a medicated cream on him.

Once the treatment is completed, I would use the powder in the dust bath as a preventative.
