General Chat / Re: Pee Spraying with a new chin

Thanks for letting me know how to quote!  ;)

Quote
Sounds to me like someone wants to sell more chinchillas.

I did not plan on adding another chin. I just posted it because it was the other advice that she gave me when I didn't like her dryer idea. And she was trying to get me to take one of her all whites.

Thanks again for all the advice and I will post if anything happens! Have a great day!  ;)

I have never seen her rub her nose or push it through the cage. One of my other chins does this to me, but never has it caused any problems and none of my others have ever wanted it. In fact they nibble at me when I do it. I can try to take a picture from my phone, but I don't know how great the quality will be. (My digital is broken.) I do not see any other fur problems with any of my other chins, (except from a little fur slippage on one of mine that is in the process of growing back) so I am at a loss. I will try the picture tonight and get back to you. Thanks.  ;)

I thought that this sounded odd and horrible, that is why I questioned it! This girl is a hobby breeder in VA, that I met. I will pass along your concerns!

In your message you said: Apparently, Breakbeat is not going to accept your new chin, Kiwi.   I would not chance putting them back together for fear they will cause damage or death to one or both.  It appears both are wanting to be the alpha chin.   Humping between two chins of the same sex is not sexual, but a way of trying to show dominance. (Sorry I am new at this and don't know how to do that neat quote thing you did! :))

So I should just give up trying then? I really don't want to have two cages. I know "the more cages the better" but I really like this new cage and I am not fond of the old one. I don't have the money to get another right now; This big one was free and I only paid $35 to make it chinny safe.

It was also reccommended to me that I get another chin to help the problem. (Not that I can afford this right now.) She said that the other two will bond and then the four will get along. Granted this is coming from the same lady that told be about the dryer, so......  ::shrug::

Right now I have these two cages next to each other and all seems to be fine, but I let them out at different times. I haven't dared try letting them out together.

Thanks for the advice! ;)

General Chat / Pee Spraying with a new chin
« on: February 26, 2009, 04:38:50 PM »
I have two female chinchillas and they both get along well. Last month I was given a large cage for free and converted it to a "chin mansion." When I did this I decided to get another chin because I had been wanting one and this cage is 6ft tall and plenty big enough for 3 chins. When I introduced the new girl, Kiwi,to my chins my older chin, Tephra, was ok, but my younger one, Breakbeat, fought with her and they started spraying pee at eachother. I immediately put them in separate cages. The next night Kiwi sprayed pee at me when I went to pick her up. After I washed my hands and tried again she let me and all was fine with us. I didn't interact her with the other chins. The next night I tired putting Kiwi in with Tephra and I kept Breakbeat in the extra cage. They seemed be be okay. Tephra is the kind of chin that is scared of her own shadow, so they seemed for afriad of eachother rather than confrontational. The next night when I went to pick up Tephra, she sprayed pee at me; Something that she has only done once to me a long time ago when she got into some place she wasn't supposed to be and didn't want to leave. I left her alone and took Kiwi out to meet with Breakbeat in a neutral place, my bathroom. Immediately Breakbeat tried to bite at Kiwi's face and then when Kiwi tried to run away she ran after her and started to....like....hump her. (I questioned myself and had to check their sexes! Female!) ::shrug:: I got them apart and tired to put Kiwi back in the cage with Tephra but when they saw each other they started trying to nip at eachother faces, so I took Kiwi out and put her back in the single cage and Breakbeat back with Tephra.

I really wanted to have the chins altogether in the new big cage. Any suggestions?
Is pee spraying normal? I have never heard of it before.
What about the humping?
I don't have the space to put the cages they are in next to eachother and I know that is the best solution, right? Should I reorganize my room so I can do this? Is that my only option?
Someone told me to put them in a small pet carrier and sit them on my dryer while it is on. She said they will bond in the "unfavorable" conditions. Is this true?
Please help! Thanks in advance for your help!  ;)

Health / Missing strip of fur
« on: February 26, 2009, 03:15:10 PM »
One of my chinchillas has a strip of fur missing in the middle between her nose and eye. At first we thought it might be a fungus, even though there was no reddness or skin irritation and started using the powder in their dust bath as suggested by my vet. That was two weeks ago. So far it is just getting slightly worse. (Very slightly, but enough that I can tell.) My Vet said that he thinks it is "kennel nose" now (rubbing of the nose on the cage). Now I worked at an animal shelter for 10 years and this condition would normally happened there in the small cages, but my chins live in a 6ft tall cage and have run of my bedroom and bathroom in the evenings when I come home from work, so I don't really think that this is the case. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance for the advice.

Cages / Re: Making a chinchilla cage from a ferret cage
« on: December 09, 2008, 09:23:48 AM »
I think it is a Care Pet? Not sure, but think that is what it says on the base. It has a purple base and black wire. I was not going to use the wire where the chins would be walking, I was going to put it up on the side of the cage so that they didn't chew on the cage coating and to keep their poopies from falling out. I have to put this cage in area that gets more traffic than the old smaller cage and my roommate doesn't want the poopies all over the floor.

Thanks!  ;)

Cages / Making a chinchilla cage from a ferret cage
« on: December 08, 2008, 04:08:03 PM »
I was just given an old, but very large ferret cage. The first thing I did was throw out the plastic shelves and plastic fasteners. I am going to get metal fasteners, but I was just wondering two things:

1) Could I use metal to make the shelves or should I stick with wood? I have seen a few chinchilla cages that have metal shelves, but most people say to use wood and I currently have woodern shelves. (I know not to use wire shelves.) If I can use metal, what kind is the best?

2) Could I put metal screening on the inside of the cage to help keep down the mess? If so would there be any kind, (besides coated, which I know not to use), that I couldn't use?

Thanks in advance for your advice! Happy Holiday

What do you think about Chinchilla Forti Diet Pro Health?

What about Natures Promise Chinchilla Diet?

Thanks for the information. Someone else is going to take them. I used to work at an animal shelter and when I can I always take in animals that need homes, even just to foster. But I am glad that they found another good home.

She sounds like my Tephra! Don't worry she will come around! It took me and Tephra almost a full year and she is still timid!

I am a little bit confused because I know others who have their males and females mixed and they have had babies and there is no problems. This is way I thought the breeder was off. How is that okay for those people?

I know that you have to take female out for birthing and babies. I have a birthing cage and was planning on getting another if need be. But I was told that my 3 year old would probably not breed.

How would you get them to bond with out being in the same cage? I can not have the cages arrangement that you suggest in my condo.

Don't worry i won't put them in the same cage if it will hurt my chinchillas. I love them! They are my babies!

Q & A / Re: Bonding Advice?
« on: November 07, 2008, 09:40:24 AM »
Just a note about Vitakraft treats:

Deffinately throw them out! My Mom sent me down a package of their Dandelion Treats. One of my girls wouldn't eat them and but the other did and then she got sick. It took may days of the toast/hay/little pellets and no supplement to get her back to health and since then it has been very easy to get upset digestion.

A note about bonding:

My oldest girl is VERY timid and I have had her for a year and there are still times when she won't let me take her out of the cage or she won't come out, but she loves when I scratch her nose and give her kisses through the cage. I have also found that she only likes to be held, when I hold her like a baby (but with her belly side down) and pat her back and rock; just like an infant. Mean while my other little girl only likes to be held by putting her butt and legs in your hands and face you; we have little staring contests and I like to say that we are contemplating! Every chin is different and I am sure you will find out what she likes by trial and error!  ;)

Q & A / Cut care
« on: November 07, 2008, 08:32:03 AM »
This morning when I was saying goodbye to my girls, I noticed a little cut on my youngest's nose. I don't know if they got into a little tiff or what, but I was just wondering if they was anything that I should put on it or will it be fine by itself? Thanks!
