General Chat / Re: Chinchilla at the pet store
« on: February 14, 2009, 01:11:20 PM »
UGH! I'm sorry, AGAIN. I didn't read through the whole thread. I just wanted to let you guys know, that even though this has absolutely nothing to do with me, I really wanted to thank you for standing up for what's right. You could save a life of not just one chinchilla, but more than that. Since they can't say thanks, I'll speak for them. Thank you very much. What might not seem like a big difference, really is. You could have saved more than one life. A LIFE. One that God created. Oops. Sorry, if you're not a christian. I feel like I just gave a lecture. Anyway, thanks.  ;)

Sorry! I just looked, and saw that there was a pet store program. Maybe you could tell them about that... Just thinking up some ideas...

Hey. Sorry to squeeze in- I hope you don't mind, but I am FERIOUS!  :flames:   :flames:   :flames: RAWR! How could a pet store do something like that? I do honestly think that they aren't TRYING to hurt the guy. After all, if he dies, its THEIR money that they're losing. I have not seen chinchillas in any pet stores, but I'll keep my eyes peeled. I really don't want him to die. I kind of have a little idea... You know how there is a program for shelters learn more about chinchillas from this website? Why can't we make one for pet stores? It would be the same thing... just giving it to pet stores. I'll look into that, even though I don't see how it can help much. But I was always taught that one (or three) person/people can make a difference. Please be honest about what you think. Thanks!

General Chat / Re: Training to be held by the tail?

Thanks for the advice. Actually, since I made that post, Twizzler will turn his head towards me, if I all his name. I don't know if he knows his NAME, or just likes my voice. Also, I have a question. I read that you can give chinchillas one little rice crispy. I tried it, an he LOVED it. More than raisins! There is no sugar added, and I wanted to check with someone, before I started to give him those once a day. Are they OK? I don't see anything that could hurt him. But I just wanted to check. Thanks!

Do you think that maybe we could all get together, and somehow talk to Jamie?

Hi! The chinchilla show on this website is for 2004, will they be having one anytime soon? If not, do you know of any other chinchilla shows? (online ones). Thanks!

Thank you very much. This information was very helpful. I will try this. One more thing. Do any of your chinchillas know their name? Do they come when they're called? I would very much like Twizzler to do this. (Not at all means anytime soon, but in the future) Are chinchillas capable of doing so? I know that they are smart little critters... But I don't want to be too "greedy" with what I want Twiz to do. Thanks a bunch! You are always a big help!

Q & A / Re: Plastic?
« on: February 09, 2009, 04:56:24 PM »
Okay. Instead of buying a whole new cage, could I maybe remove the ledge, and get another ledge? (Leapn' Ledge) [sp?] Or a store brand? The only other plastic part in the cage in the main base, (which is well over his head) and he has never chewed it. Is this okay? I don't want anything to happen to Twiz!

Q & A / Re: Wanting a dust bath?
« on: February 09, 2009, 04:48:26 PM »
Thanks everybody. Um... about him doing wonderful, I just said that because we have only had him or one month, and he was settling in well. That's what I meant. He doesn't have and vet back round. And no, he is not drooling. If you read my other posts, I can't seem to get him to let me check his teeth. He doesn't have anything wet o his paws, so maybe he's just itching? Something I did notice- (I feed him pellets with my hand, so he thinks that they're treats) and when he chews, he throws his head back and stands on his back legs, and chews. Is this a problem. I only saw it once. Was he maybe performing a trick for me? Thanks so much! ;)

General Chat / Training to be held by the tail?
« on: February 08, 2009, 03:16:17 PM »
Twizzler, my chinchilla, is a baby. Well... over 3 months old. My old chinchilla, that died, he could be held by the tail to be groomed. Twizzler was never trained to do so, and wriggles when I try. Also, I can't get a good hold on him, to sucssesfully look at his teeth, without hurting him. I don't want to lose all of his trust with one dumb move. Any suggestions? How do you train them to do that? Please help!

Q & A / Plastic?
« on: February 08, 2009, 03:10:36 PM »
Hi! When we got the cage for our new chinchilla, we bought a guinea pig cage. It is made of plastic, but only the bottom part. I check it every two days to make sure that there are no bite marks. He doesn't chew on it, only maybe one or two... but no more. Is this sae? I didn't no about not wanting plastic around them until just a little bit ago. Is it okay? Thanks a bunch!

Q & A / Wanting a dust bath?
« on: February 08, 2009, 03:01:19 PM »
My chinchilla, Twizzler, he has been doing wonderful. I watch his habits and things, to make sure that they're not changing. Well... recently, he's been digging in his chips, and putting his head down, almost like he wants to roll over. To make sure that there wasn't a problem, I gave him a dust bath, just to make sure he CAN roll, if he wanted too. He can, but he continues doing this. Also, I see him wiping his mouth with his paw a lot. Another thing that kind o worried me, was I caught him chewing on his bedding. (wood chips) I thought that maybe he didn't have enough to chew on. I gave him his favorite- a toilet paper roll. I haven't seen him chew on his bedding so far, but the other problem keeps going on. Also, I almost never catch him sleeping! Even in the day, he doesn't seem restless, just not tired and giddy or excited. Any ideas?

A caring chinchilla owner- Brucey1234 ;)

General Chat / Re: My chin died unexpectedly...

Wow. Okay, first, I want to say thanks for putting so much effort into writing this big, long post. I will do my best to answer all of your questions. I fully agree with the cat theory, but there are a few twists. First, I heard the cat yell in the middle of the night. I ran into the room to see what the matter was. The cat had run downstairs. (The next day I checked her paw, and it had a little dry blood on it.) I found Bruce looking normal, and checked him thoroughly. I moved his fur to check for cuts, and there were none. I honestly don't think that are cat was trying to hurt him, just see what he was.

The temperature was 70 degrees F.

No, I made sure that he was nowhere near the heating duct.

About the picking up. I read that it is best to slide your hand gently underneath their body, then slowly lift them out. I was the only one allowed to get him out, so nobody did.

He did have a bad heart... or so we think. We never had him examined by a vet, we just buried him. After I thought about it, that is what I thought happened. We might have played with him a little too much. (His personality was laid back anyway.)

I did actually buy that in the pet store, but we showed it to the lady we bought it from, and she said that it was no good, so we took it back. Also, another thing that makes me mad are those stupid plastic balls. They say, "Chinchilla safe!" but they're as about far away from safe as you can get!

I did get dust for Bruce. I read that was not good either.

We didn't have any aluminum.

On the box, it says that the puzzle piece things are made of Loofah.

I do use perfume, but I'm always careful to change my clothes (or take a shower) before holding him. We only use air freshener in the bathroom, which is quite a ways away from where he was.

We did get another chinchilla, and the cat has never bothered it. We do keep the door shut when we're not here. And the shutting in the closet, I was really tired and not thinking straight. It is a big, walk in closet, but I still understand what you're saying. Thanks! ;)

Q & A / Boxes safe to chew?
« on: January 13, 2009, 05:30:26 PM »
Hello! I put a small cardboard box into my baby chin's cage. He started chewing it, and I wanted to make sure that it's okay. There is no ink on it, except for some white. Is it okay, or should I take it out?  :-\
