It had to come out...because the tooth was dead. He said losing a front tooth is hard on them. But typically their back teeth they can adjust.

He said that the chinchilla he extracted a molar on a good ten years ago was just in for an eye infection. Never had an issue with his teeth again. That gives me hope.

Yes bag balm...they even make a Veterinary version. Also Blu-Kote...it is a spray antiseptic protective coating that comes in a spray can. Note that it stains so spray into say a disposable cup and use a Q-tip to apply. I forget who told me about the blue stuff. We had gotten a different bedding once and had issues. Just dug the can out to make sure I spelled it correctly.

It was a molar tooth not a front tooth. Tuesday when he mentioned tooth extraction...I was concerned about long term. He removes teeth from rabbits all the time. Once about 10 years ago on a chin. He said that chin never had another tooth issue after. And he still sees it.

The way he showed me with the skeletal skull their bottom jaw is not locked like ours. They can move it forward and back as well side to side. The tooth missing won't effect him at all. Because he still can grind it down with the other molars. Because of how their jaw is. The tooth was dead...he didn't even need his extracting tools to remove it.

I also got a lesson on chinchillas tooth bite and how they chew. By his showing me on a sketetal head of a porupine. Similar skull structure as a chinchilla just our guys are smaller. That Nibbles has a wonderful bite.

I also learned that after the lesson...the first vet we took him to trimmed to much off his teeth. But as we all know their teeth grow so not a long term issue. Because she trimmed his bottom front teeth down to next to nothing!

Well...my chinchilla had an abscessed tooth removed today. Runny nose and a drippy mouth was his symptoms. Also not eating well. Never had one bit of an issue with his eyes.

Now...Fluffy my other chin. Had a runny eye awhile back. Which caused the fur to fall out around it. The vet lifted his eyelid back and the third eyelid was redish in color. Ointments treated the eye and all is well. Did they pull your chins eyelid back? Freaked me out I thought his eye was about to pop out!

Nibbles again had to make another trip to the vet. His appointment was for today...but I took him in late Tuesday for antibiotics and the diagnosis has to be an ab
scessed tooth! Rescheduled for Friday (today) Bad tooth out and Nibbles is already drooling less!

Thanks Debbie! For all the advice...I am not running out and buying a wee one anytime soon. But know when our schedule allows it. And I feel it's "right" we'll do so. Having the two and having Nibbles sick scared me. I worried about what would happen to Fluffy if he happened to be the one left alone in the cage. Now...I see having three maybe best. But...right now...we're planning for a mission trip. So...not the right timing.

Debbie...So keeping him in a separate cage...and letting the bigger ones play around the cage seeing in?

The scare we had with Nibbles...I worried if something happened to him. With Fluffy always having a cage buddy. Left his litter to only have a just weaned chin from another litter with him at our home. How he would handle it...that I'm seriously considering a baby. But...I need to make sure that Nibs is 100% better. Because I don't want a new chin...seeing him as a weak chin and harming him either.

I've got time...they are only 4 years old. I also am not one to rush out and make a decision before weighing all the pros and cons. My first priority is the two we currently have.

I would imagine you still house in a separate cage...until well socialized. Just was wondering if a weaned chin would be more apt to be accepted by the two we already have.

Did look at the website where we got our other two...and, they've moved. So it's an hour and a half drive one way. Though they don't have any chins right now.

Though...sadly when I was looking for an exotic vet I learned that they couldn't even recommend one. They don't take their chins to a vet. Unless it is a special color. Which saddened me...but we've an exotic vet.

 We're getting a carrier to make it easier for transporting to a vet visit. We have their Collapsible Travel Home as well...Built very well! For when it storms we can move them safely to the basement. My son calls it their Tornado Bunker. It is quite roomy yet smaller than their ferret nation cage they reside in. But feel it is bulky to take to the vet office.

I use ceramic/glass loaf pans for litter pans. I use pine bedding though. Just because I know it won't hurt if they nibble on it. Let me know how the cat litter works. Never heard of that before...

We've two chinchillas in a double caged Ferret Nation cage. So tons of space...My husband calls from the pet store today...wanting to BUY a black chinchilla. It kept scratching to get out of the cage it was in...seeming friendly as well.

I know adding a mature male to the mix...even a young one is difficult. I would assume getting one just weaned maybe easier to do.

What's your take on this? Would our chinchillas both males be more apt to adjust to a just weaned male chin? Or...forget it entirely?
