Occasionally i'll size down my room by blocking off part of the room (usually I block one point and build a wall around me).  This appears to only encourage Vanilla to explore more, and she's learned how to get me to move out of the way and then make a dash for the exit.  It really is amazing.  She's learned how to climb my shelf to get to the bed to get to the blocked off areas.

Q & A / Re: Why vinager to clean the cage?

Vinegar is a natural cleaner that doesn't seem to harm chinchillas.  That and the bitter taste will generally keep them from chewing everything to bits.

Wow you've gone through quite a bit.  Welcome to the forum.  You're story is amazing, and i'm sorry for your loss of Tid Bit.  Good luck, and be sure to read up.  There's lots of great information in the old posts.  I continue to learn new things everyday about my chin. By the way, yours look absolutely gorgeous.  I think you're right on the coloring.

General Chat / Re: Moving chins around/ smoking around chins
« on: April 24, 2009, 08:16:11 AM »
From talking to a petsmart employee who was quite knowledgeable about chins, smoking around a chin will stress them out.  I believed the guy because he seemed to know his stuff, and apparently he had owned up to 63 chins at once (former breeder i guess?).  His theory was chins would naturally react to the smell of smoke and become stressed or anxious.  Personally, i think that makes sense, as I have noticed when my friend comes over who smokes my chin will avoid him in particular while moving freely about everyone else.

It would pose problems to breeders if they are bringing in more exotic species of chinchillas (are there such things?).  However, according to Section 4 List of Approved Species, even if they (let's assume we speak of chinchillas) are banned, then any import bans or restrictions would be useless and they wouldn't enforce a restriction.  Sounds like it's nothing to get all kerfluffled about.

Q & A / Re: Scented dust bath...?...
« on: April 17, 2009, 04:58:32 PM »
If you're talking about the scentsations stuff, I've used it.  My chin seemed to like it, but the dust is a bit coarser than other available options.  I've since bought blue cloud, which my chin seems to like more (so much so that during play time she'll jump in her bathhouse several times a night just to roll in the stuff).

Congrats!  She looks great.  Great name for her too.  It's funny, I grew up down the street from a Hugo A Owens middle school (a deep creek resident born and raised).

Don't worry Jo Ann, she's not in an aquarium.  That was just an image of her climbing on a shelf in my room from the first day we got her.  She has a proper wire cage complete with 3 shelves, a house, cooling pad, dust bath, etc.  Her cage is cleaned regularly and she gets to play every night for a few hours inside my room.

Hi everyone.
Just thought i'd drop a hello as a new member and introduce myself.  I'm a student at Virginia Tech originally out of Chesapeake, VA.  I'm the proud parent of my Vanilla (a standard grey) purchased from petsmart almost one month ago today.  She's been so great.  She's getting more and more acquainted with her home each day.  In fact, just last night she sat in my palm for a short period of time.  I haven't gotten her quite used to being petted or held yet, but it's something to work for.  She's very sociable and loves running around my room while my girlfriend and I lay on the floor with her.  Glad i finally found a forum to be able to talk and read up more about these wonderful creatures.
Here's a picture of her from the day we brought her home:
