New Births / Re: 2 kits born 5/2/12

Thanks for the kind comments. I just wanted to clarify that the mom is a black velvet. The first photo in the album is their older sister. She's a mosaic or mosaic TOV, 2 years old now. She's the same one pictured as a kit in the shoe on the first page.

I can't figure how to get my photos small enough to post here using my Mac so I loaded the photos to the facebook page my daughter created for our chinchillas (Smudge's Chinchilla Family).
Here is a direct link to photos of the new kits:

There are older photo albums that can be viewed from Smudge's Chinchilla Family main page.

Enjoy.

General Chat / Re: White-tipped tail on Mosaic??
« on: May 07, 2012, 01:16:37 PM »
So what color did your mystery chin end up being?

I have one that is that same splotchy gray. I originally thought he was a standard, but his color is identical to his twin, a mosaic, except the mosaic has a white tail and a big stripe of white on the hip. He reminds me of my silver mosaic who is 2 y.o. now. and was born a similar color but had the tell-tale white tail of a mosaic.

Does a mosaic have to have at least a white tip on its tail?

New Births / 2 kits born 5/2/12

Ashes had her first kits of '12. One mosaic male 36 g and one standard male 54 g. The little one's eyes were closed so I took a q-tip in warm water to gently open up the lids. I wasn't there for the delivery, but by 11 am the kits were all clean and dry and nursing.

In 2011, Ashes had one litter, one standard female born early Sept.

In 2010, Ashes had triplets but one did not survive the birth. The surviving two were female, one standard, one black velvet.

Her first litter was in April of that year, a silver mosaic female who still lives with us.

Conformation and Quality / Re: Ebony Violets

Okay, I had just looked this up...dreaming of what kind of chinchilla I should get to breed to the one that was just born.

To get an ebony violet you have to breed an Ebony violet-carrier to an Ebony Violet carrier. Then if you are lucky to have one of the kits be an Ebony-Violet you will know it because it will be Violet with an all over wrap - no white belly. You can get a Light Ebony Violet, a Dark Ebony Violet, etc. The pictures I have seen did look a little bit darker than the regular violets, or seemed at least to have a darker face.

I want one.

Picture 3: Baby Smash got right to nursing, and Ashes is a great mom.
Picture 4: Smudge practically melted through the cage to be near Ashes. (I moved him to the top level before the birth)

The first three photos were taken when she was 7 hours old.

Ashes (black velvet) and Smudge (white mosaic) had their first kit (and mine) 8:45am Thursday. My daughter named the baby, Smash. I think she is a White TOV...she has the vertical stripe up her front paws, a white tail, and the TOV two-tone sides (by my eyes).

Here are some pictures from the first day.  We weighed her the afternoon of her birth and she weighed 63.5 grams.  She was born on the 112th day.

I will post photos when I figure out how to make them small enough to post.
