Actually I do live in a great area. I rarely lock my doors as I am far out in the country (takes me 45 minutes to drive to work as it's out so far.) People are so friendly. K is my nearest neighbor. He lives about 3 miles from my house. My actual neighbors are the cows behind me.  :2funny:

Aren't those balls dangerous for chinchillas? I had one once with a hamster and his really heated up after just 10 minutes of rolling around. Given than chins are so sensitive to heat I would think this would be a no-no for them.

Obi's 5 months old so he's still a baby. As for the overtime, I worked 63 hours last week but I decided to take off Wed-Sun this week and then work Mon and Tues next week so we'll have a little time together. That's why I wanted till wait till March to get a new pet but that decision was out of my hands (and I can't say I'm sad for it.) As for Obi (and any potintial friends) they will never be negleted. My neighbor, K, and his kids already know how to take care of him as they are over at my house frequently to do chores for me, like play with Obi if I am at work. (They use services like house cleaning, shopping, etc to make money as K cannot work a full time job. K is in renal failure and cannot work a full time job with his treatment. Around my area people who can afford to pay them to do little things like the above. It's a way to help them without them feeling like charity cases, same as the "Santa" who is coming to their house Christmas Eve to deliver some presents for the family.)

I've thought about declawing my snowshoe as she has more trouble retracting her claws as she gets older but I've seen the side effects of what can happen if it's not done right and don't want to risk putting my animals through. My cousin's vet did not get the entire joint and it started regrowing back. It took about 6 months before the cat was in bad enough condition that he couldn't hide the pain. Then they had to amputate his left paw.  :::((( I would rather train my babies to use a scratchin post and buy them toys than to risk it. But if your experiences have been all good Debbie and your vet doesn't miss then go for it. You've got to do the best you can to take care of your pets.  :::grins::

General Chat / I think I have chinchilla fever
« on: December 18, 2009, 11:10:46 PM »
Ever since Obi dropped into my life (geez, only one week ago today) I have been thinking that he might need a friend. All of my animals have been pairs, trios, or more. Of course I have already been reading about slow introductions between chinchillas that don't know each other. While I love Obi January and February are my busiest months of the year (seriously last year for 3 weeks I LIVED at my office, only coming home on Sundays, slept in my office, showered in the gym, ate in the cafeteria, etc. not pretty.) And this year it's already starting early with the overtime. K and his family will be mostly taking care of Obi (unless he finds a kidney match then Obi will probably be sleeping at the office with me; I'm sure my boss won't mind.)  ::)   rofl  Just by coincidence a local shelter posted today on their website 2 young male chinchillas for adoption. Fate, Coincidence, or just too soon?  ???  I just don't want him to be lonely and miserable without someone at my house for several hours during the evening to let him out to play and give him attention. This is why I really wished my brother had waited, in a way, because while I have time now to spend with him I won't in 2 weeks. I also have been thinking about outfitting my old ferret cage (scrubbed clean as new and aired out, of course), a ferret nation 3 story, into a chinchilla paradise. After the "get to know each other" phase it would be a great place for 3 chins.

Q & A / Re: Questions about chews and toys
« on: December 18, 2009, 10:48:04 PM »
I was wondering about the hammock. When my ferrets were alive I made tons of bedding for them and I've still got lots of fleece and other materials. I might make up a hammock for Obi tomorrow and see how he likes it. Since I'm online anyway I decided to email the company about what type of wood they use in their products. I'll let you know when they respond. My brother is already telling me that I'm being too picky about Obi-Wan just like I was so picky about my ferrets.  :2funny: I just keep telling him that I don't think a person can be too picky when it comes to the health and happiness of their pets.  ;)

General Chat / Autistic boy and Obi-Wan
« on: December 18, 2009, 10:33:39 PM »
Obi-Wan is so smart and sweet. My neighbor, K, and his wife, L, have several children that they had from both of their previous marriages and 3 they adopted after they got married, before K got sick. K's first born, H, is autistic and will never get more mature than the 6 year old mental state he has now. But he's a happy and healthy 19 year old who helps K with the multiple chores he does for people like me (grocery shopping, housecleaning, lawns, etc.) to keep their family afloat. K and a couple of the kids, including H, came over to my house today to drop off groceries and do some housework. He also wanted to show his second son how to take care of Obi in case K could not come over and I needed someone to help with Obi. Of course H wanted to see him. K had taken Obi out of the cage as he was awake and wanting a raisin (little mooch.) H was kind of scarred of Obi so K held him while convincing H to just touch him. Well, H put his hand out toward Obi and Obi grabbed it and started kissing his fingers.  ::wub:: Obi did not try to nibble or jump, instead he sat in K's hands and kissed H while H rubbed him under the chin (he hasn't let me rub under his chin yet!) It was like Obi realized that H is different and needed to be responded to more positively. Animals are just amazing!

Cages / Re: Ferret Nation Cage, How to..?
« on: December 18, 2009, 10:14:40 PM »
You can pretty much reassemble that cage as you need to. When I had my ferrets my ferret nation was 3 stories (bolted to the wall for safely) without the rack underneath. Eventually I might do as you did and just take out the plastic and the wires and put in all pine. Did you leave your bottom floor without the tray or leave it in? Or did you just cover it up with something? I was thinking the spacing in the bars might be too big for the chins but I could be wrong. Also Obi-Wan is still little so it might not be too much for an adult chinchilla.

AWWW! Your chins are so cute! I had been wondering how you discipline a chinchilla and you seem to have found a good way.  ::clapp:: Bravo! Hopefully she will realize that she can't be a bully and be a good girl at the same time.

Q & A / Re: Questions about chews and toys
« on: December 18, 2009, 09:52:00 PM »
Thanks for the suggestions. The Chubes are a must. My ferrets adored them and I know Obi will too. As far as the fiddle sticks I'm kind of wary of products that don't tell what kind of wood they come from. Maybe I'll call the company and find out. Probably just being picky, though.  :blush2: But I would absolutely hate to give anything to Obi that might make him sick in the short or long term. I found a flying saucer at petsmart: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3155602 but I'm relectant to get it because of it being plastic. What if Obi chews on it? K got Obi a herb 'n hay tunnel: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3599388 and some lava rocks today. He said it was a welcome present for Obi.  ;) If Obi likes it then it will become part of his toy rotation in and out of the cage.

Q & A / Questions about chews and toys
« on: December 17, 2009, 08:38:52 PM »
I have been looking at all the chinchilla toys and chews that are offered for people's pets. Before I drop a load on Obi-Wan this weekend  ::greed:: I wanted to get some people's opinions on these fun looking things. All of my animals are spoiled rotten so Obi-Wan needs to get used to the good life.  ::silly:: But at the same time I don't want to get him things that might be bad for him. Treats are strict: one raisin every 2-3 days and maybe 1/2 banana chip after cage changing once a week. Toys, on the other hand, are unlimited for my babies.  :D

knot nibble: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753368&lmdn=Small+Pet
stick ball (nuts removed) http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3155604&lmdn=Small+Pet
nature ball: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2751763&lmdn=Small+Pet

Also, can anyone recommend someplace I can get him either a large wheel that won't hurt his spine or a flying saucer? I cannot seem to find one not made of plastic.

I saw this on petsmart's website
http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3553776
I don't know enough about chinchillas to know if this would be healthy or not. After all this is the same company that makes a fiesta food with lots of fruit and other treats, which cannot be healthy for the animals.

I've been worrying about the cat instinct until Obi scared my snowshoe (Soxy.) She's a hunter and neither of my cats is declawed (don't believe in it.) But the girls are only allowed around him when supervised. Otherwise the door to his room is shut. I'm honestly not worried about the flame point (Penelope) as she's too lazy to chase even a string. Penelope and Obi have done this twice more. I'm going to have to get it on video, it's so cute. He sits on the level where they are level and they talk like they're having a conversation.  :::grins::

I'll get him another hay rack this weekend. Better to be safe then sorry, even if it does tick him off (he seems to really like it, although it might just be the bell as he is always ringing it.)  ::tickedoff::  Probably just take the bell off and hang if from the cage as he doesn't chew on it, just uses his paws to push it back and forth. It's cute.  :blush2:

Q & A / Re: Nibbles
« on: December 17, 2009, 08:02:00 PM »
Obi-Wan's been doing this to me too. Just light nibbling and washing. He hasn't been too hard yet but I thought, like Jo Ann stated, that it was a sign of affection. Different animals have different ways to say "Love ya."   ::kiss99::
