they are both boys as far as i know i can see the "male parts" sticking out all the time like they are aroused haha. somethin about wittle being skittish is wierd but hes doing everything else a chinchilla does. he goes crazy when i shake the treat bag he still gnaws everything he pulls on the cage bars at like 2 in the morn to come out and play he eats and drinks to. maybe it was just my imagination but i guess ill sched an appointment to get them both checked as kind of like a physical for chinchillas haha i do have a granite slab the "chin chiller" but only chiko really likes to sleep on it wittle barely touches it : /

thank you i will heres an update i just let the chins free run for the night and wittle was very very skittish like wouldnt even come out of the cage. eventually i froze up gave him a treat and watched him without moving he was fine until chiko start bolting around then hed rush right back into the cage. while they were both out chiko kept trying to mount wittle and he made that click noise thats obviously means get off me. Could chiko be bullying wittle too much? im worried that he will stop eating and completely become lethargic. i plan to make a vet appointment for the both of them as a regular check up to make sure everything is ok. i just hope i dont have to seperate them they get along 90% of the time they are like brothers and they are only a month apart and they are still babies too.

my room is a little hot and humid its hard to regulate because my parents are finicky about when to use the AC and when to open a window naturally when they decide to open windows they dont open mine and when i get home from work my room is a bit hotter than the rest of the house. His ears were flat cuz he was sleepin and a little red cuz the room was probably a little hot.

last night he came out to play and was gnawing at the bars to come out around 2 a.m it breaks my heart to deny them free run so late at night but i have work at 7 and cant let them out that late so its either around 10-11 or not.

wittle is smaller hasent lost any weight and his color is greyish (not the normal grey but hes all over grey) chiko is chubby and hes a dark tan. its sad when i give them treats wittle takes longer to eat his so i have to protect him from chiko or he'll steal the rest of wittle's treat :( sometimes chiko can be a bully but as of right now i dont know who is dominant because wittle always mounts chiko but i never see chiko mount wittle. at night they race around the cage causing all sorts of noise but rarely ill here the clicking sound they make when they fight but they have gotten along in the cage for about 5 months now. i guess they just have small arguments here and there.

thank you for the help im sure hes fine i havent seen the breathing thing at all maybe it was a one time deal.

I have two chinchillas named wittle and chiko. chiko is chubby and big while wittle is well little (compared to chiko) I dont know wich one has the weight problem because one could be to big or one could be to small but my real problem is ive just noticed tonight that wittle wouldnt come out of the cage for free run. Chiko dove out as normal but wittle just remained inside running all around the cage and standing at the front door as if he wanted to come out. He came out eventually and took a 3min dust bath then bolted back in the cage. I noticed that his ears are red and veiny wich i normally associate with being too hot and that his breathing was like it was labored. Every breath kinda "moved" his body but when he calmed down he was breathing fine. Its almost 8pm here wich means they should both be active and rdy to go but right now hes sleeping on his side in the tube and chiko is watching tv. If i touch or motion toward wittle he reacts accordingly and runs away or pushes my hand away but im just wondering if theres something wrong with him because i know they hide their sickness even until death.

P.S. his ears are flat and still a little red maybe he is overheated??

to those that read this wall of text thank you beforehand and i look forward to hearing some advice as to what could be wrong.

Q & A / i feel bad :(
« on: April 30, 2010, 11:00:06 PM »
Every night i let my chin Chiko out for free run and i can tell when he starts to overheat by looking at his ears if his veins are really red.
the other night when i put him back in his cage he laid on his side probably really hot and tired but he easily recovered but he then starts to beg to come out of the cage again.

when i let him out he rockets around the room and jumps on and off my bed so hes getting lots of exercise but i cant have him out all night.

i feel so bad to watch him grab the bars and look at me with those eyes that just say "please give me some more time outside"

we are looking to get him a cage mate to help occupy him at night when i sleep but is there a way i can get him to be a little more forgiving when i put him back in the cage? i feel like he dislikes me for ending his play time.

p.s. he has plenty of chew toys in the cage along with a tube to crawl through and a chin-chiller tile to sleep on.

any advice would be much appreciated

Q & A / From the ashes rises a new beginning (with a few concerns)
« on: April 23, 2010, 10:27:29 PM »
For those of you who may know i lost my dear chin Petey a couple days ago and so with much deliberation and some coaxing by my gf we have adopted another chinchilla named Chiko. Chiko is a 3 month old tan male and very new to his surroundings. What concerns me about him is that he is a compulsive jumper so far and im worried he might hurt himself jumping around the cage the way he does. I think he is just scared and he will settle down when he gets a little older but i hope hes not as skittish for his whole life. anyone know if this is the way a young chin would act to new surroundings?

its so unbearable and my gf is already talking about getting a new chin to fill the void but i feel that would be dishonoring petey by thinking about replacing him so soon

while a new chin would cheer me up i feel id be betraying his memory by using the same cage and toys but i refuse to let the new one use his house... ::cry222:::

I am a new chin owner and had Petey for only 2 weeks

everything was ok until i arrived home today and he wasent moving around just sitting in the middle of his cage doing nothing so i rushed him to the vet
it turns out he inhaled a piece of food through his tracea and his lungs filled up with fluid trying to get it out. about 4 min into the waiting he started to gasp and fall over in my arms...his heart had stopped right then and there. I had nightmares of him dieing in my arms and it came true. Petey was only 4 months old he was just a baby and i cant believe hes gone. My heart is broken and looking at his cage and toys and the house he slept in makes the pain even worse. i loved him very much and now i cant stand to think that every time i come home at night he wont be there sitting on his wooden block like always. ill never see him again

i love you petey very very much  :'( :'( :'(

thank you for the continued assistance its good to know that hes fine..for some reason i couldnt sleep last night and i found out he eats and drinks at around 6 a.m he started to suck down water and eat his pellets  :::grins::

Also an incident happened last night while playing with him...he was freerunning around my room and he found a flavored sunflower seed on the floor and absolutely loved it he did that chittering sound they make when they are really happy. now i know thats not a good snack for him but he wont he any other treats now lol he liked nuts but after that he just says no.

any way i can safely feed him a treat like one of those sunflower seeds?

the medication he is on is a triple antibiotic ointment neomycin and polymyxin B sulfates and Bacitracin Zinc Ophthalmic ointment USP (i have no idea what any of those words mean)

he has been on it for about 3 days and his eye is much better im supposed to check in with the vet on mon.

i dont exactly know his schedule but i do know that when i get home every night he is on his wooden resting block waiting for me but when i open the door he doesnt seem to care that much.

when i take him out and close the door he will run around but for a short time. do they et bored of their surroundings because i try to stack shoes and other objects to make fun playgrounds on the floor but maybe hes bored with my room and wants to check out a new place.

i just hope he isnt bored of me or the surroundings or if hes mad at me for giving him the medicine cuz i have to wrap him in a towel to get him to stay still long enough to apply is because all of this behavior started when i started giving him the medicine.

thank you for all the feedback so far and im looking forward to more advice.

im feeding him pet store food wich im assuming sucks so im gona buy a different kind as for the drinking he is and im not worried anymore i have a new concern. he loves to come out of the cage and run around my room i get back from my gf's house around 2 or 3 in the morn wich is when hes wide awake so i let him out.

lately however since ive been giving him his medicine for his eye all he does is stay in his hut and sleep at this moment ive had his cage door open for about and hour and a half and hes only stepped out twice for a small amount of time.

i know they are supposed to be playful and if they arent its a sign of illness but i cant help but wonder if hes just resting his eye up.

any advice would be very helpful and thank you for the previous posts. :)
