Health / Safe wood
« on: April 14, 2011, 11:50:11 PM »
Going to put some wood planks (around 4 or 5 inches high) around my inside of the bottom level of my chinchillas cage (to stop bedding, dust, and other variouse items from falling out of the cage), what would be a safe wood I could get from lowes or home depo that would be okay for them to chew on?

Health / Pear twigs

I have a healthy fruit bearing pear tree in the back yard, and I was told that twigs on the pear tree make good treats for chinchillas, just wanted to know what other peopel though.

Health / Hazelnuts
« on: March 03, 2011, 11:11:41 AM »
My chinchilla loves hazelnuts and so did my other before he passed; however, I've been reading that nuts shouldn't be given to Chinchillas and that they can be given to chinchillas. I been feeding mine a hazelnut about once a day (raw and unsalted) and when he hears the rattle of the nuts in the container he goes nuts until he has one in his paws. So I wanted to know what y'all think about hazelnuts and if you approve of them how often one should be given (Zeze has been getting one every one of two days)

Memorials / Goodbye Loki
« on: February 20, 2011, 01:38:59 AM »
2 days ago I lost a great friend, Loki. He was my second chinchilla to ever own and my first to lose. I'm taking this especially hard because if it wasn't for me he would still be with me and my other chinchilla, Zeze; I like to talk them into the bathroom because there are lots of ledges for them to climb on and room for them to jump, I looked at my phone to check something and Loki went under the door before I could stop him, I had forgotten to plug up the area under the door. The family dog happened to be passing by when Loki did this and went after him. While running Loki's heart stopped before our dog could catch him. I'm so sorry Loki, you'll always be in my heart forever.

I can't get the image to show up in this post, so for those who are interested here is a link to a picture of Loki.

Its from a local pet store, but on that is known for taking good care of their animals and knowing what their doing. They double check that he was a male. It may not be a sign of dominance more of a special thing my chin likes to do, when i play with him he some times trys to latch onto my arm or leg were there is bare skin and do that same thing while lightly biting my arm. It may be though.

General Chat / Older chin harassing newer
« on: November 21, 2010, 12:05:57 AM »
I just got a new chinchilla (male) and I introduced him to my only other chin (also male), My older one keeps trying to mount my new chin. I don't think anything harmful would come of this I just don't want him to be harassed to much. He doesn't try to do this that often its been about 2 days and I've seen him try a couple times. Help?
