Q & A / Re: Soon to be Chinchilla owner for the first time!
« on: September 15, 2010, 10:05:56 PM »
you need to check his eyes and see if there's anything wrong with it, is it watery/dusty/ etc., if yes you need to take him to the vet and get him check out before it become and infection in which he could lose his eyes =[ and about his behavior, it might due to the fact that he's uncomfortable with his eyes, or he's just tired and sleepy. Mine just lay down on his side and sleep right after his bath (and i thought he was dead when i first see him lay down like that  :) ). And he bit you because chinchillas don't like to be held, so that's normal. hehe i feel sorry for them chinchillas, i would get so annoyed if people pick me up and pet me everyday  :::grins:: 1 more thing, try to not put your hands in his cage to grab him, open the door and let him come out. Give him a treat if he comes to you (i'm not sure if he's old enough to get treat though), it will teach him to go to you, instead of forcing him. He will be scared if you put your hand in and grab him, so don't do it unless you have to. Plus, he needs his cage as his property and he needs to feel safe in it.

Yeah i just checked his eyes and he was fine, i just think he got tired after his dust bath. ;D Yeah when i first saw my chinchilla sleep on his side i thought he was dead but then i saw him wake up. Its sad they don't like getting picked up and yes im starting to learn to just wait til he comes to the cage to come out of it on his own. Hes not old enough for treats so i just use the bit of timothy hay and wait for him to come out. I bought him block treats to chew on but he doesn't like them too much for some odd reason? ::shrug::lol

Q & A / Re: Behavior Change
« on: September 15, 2010, 07:41:03 PM »
Hi Jo Ann,

I've also come to a similar problem with my chin. I just got him from a breeder September 6th and he just turned 2 months yesterday :) I take him out to play in my bathroom so we can bond. I heard to sit in your bathtub with your chinchilla helps you bond? But it only made him stress so i let him run around on the bathroom floor and he absolutely loves it! rofl He's extremely shy though and since hes so young i want him to be able to get used to me and start trusting me. What is the BEST way for him to form a bond with me? WHat can i do that you suggest for him to start trusting me and love me and not nibble at my hand at times? Please help ??? I feel like im doing a horrible job or something  ::shrug::

Yeah i might just wait til gets bigger because i dont want him to hurt himself trying to escape. I actually just returned the big cage that he escaped from and now im searching online or at another pet store for a good one. Today i gave him a dust bath and i think he might have gotten some dust in his eyes? or something because he didnt last very long and he wasnt acting like himself. When i went to pick him up he let me grab him but then he bit me ( not extremely hard)  but then once in the cage he went in his hut and went to sleep. What could be wrong? :'(

So last night Chinchi was so anxious to get out and as i took him out, he kinda bit/nibbled my hand. Mind you he hasnt really done that to me before so could it be really bad?
I think he's used to you letting him out everyday, so he just nibble your hand to be cute hehe i think... I don't think it's anything serious. He's fine. So dont worry! U should be worry when he doesn't eat/drink/move a lot, or when his stools are soft and watery.
Here is a list of common health problem that chinchillas have, I find it very useful so i hope it helps
http://www.tjschinchillasupplies.com/infopage.html#health
I remember when i first got my chinchilla i always get worried and go post everything up here hehe when he make just a little sound i would be like omg he's making sound, something's wrong with him! or he's grinding his teeth while sleeping! or oh my god he's sad and he's not that active! Turned out he just had a bad day, like us human sometimes.
 :)

Lol yeah hes been getting too spoiled i guess. I have him in a small cage for now since hes still a baby 3 months today:) I really hope hes not unhappy or something like that. I bought him a big cage but since hes small and an escape artist he managed to slide right through the bars. So hopefully when he grows in a month i can use that cage. if not i might have to get another one. What do you think?

congratz on your chinchilla!  :::grins:: And about him scratching and chewing on the cage, it's not bad. He just want to play more. My boy always do that and he would give me his cute chinchilla sad face with both ears down to make me feel bad, i even start a topic asking about it, but he's alright. From my personal experience, my chinchilla took about 3 months to bond with me, and i know it because he stopped biting my finger so hard that i bleed for serveral times hehe and he let me pet him. Your chinchilla is much younger so i think it will take less time for him to bond with you.

Thank you! :) and okay good i was worried he was stressed or something worse. He kept me awake all of last night because he wanted to come out and play (mind you this was from 2am-5am). Since hes a baby im hoping he will bond with me faster and that he'll get used to me faster. Im in the process of buying him a new cage, because the cage hes in now its not too big enough for him to go crazy.  ::nod::
Yeah, they can get kind of bossy if spoiled (like ours, lol). Being nocturnal, we had to compromise and set playdates in the morning at 9:00 AM (lap time) and evening 10:00 PM (run around the bathroom like an insane thing time). This helped lower the demands for playtime at 3 in the morning, lol.
Our little Sir has chewed on the apple sticks, lava stone chewies, and willow baskets we find at the pet store from day one. He also loves the bits of UNTREATED,KILN DRIED (did I say untreated?) pine wood bits from the local hardware stores trimming bench. I can buy a small piece of wood and they will cut it into blocks for me, then I sand away the splinters. Both he and his Mum love to redecorate with them. They also like the pet grade basket nests at the pet store. It takes about three weeks to totally destroy one, lol. Your babies are chewers, that's how it is. Oh, I also find willow baskets at the local craft store. If you buy s\chewing toys at a craft store - make sure they are made out of a safe matierial, pine, willow, cherry, etc. Never cedar.

Yeah in the morning he doesnt really move much but at night, he just has random times he wants to play lol. Im working on a schedule with him so he can finally adjust better. I have to say we've been bonding pretty well ,considering he lets me hold him on my chest and kiss his head and scratch the top of his head ;) so cute! And i bought him the little blocks and hes been taking them pretty well!

Yeah definitely! I just got him today:) Still trying to figure out a name for him. Im pretty nervous picking him up lol hes 7 1/2 weeks old. He has a little cave/hut thing and then a comfy hammock. What type of bedding would be the best? Because i bought pine bedding and i laid it ontop of towels, and it seems like hes chewing/nibbling on the bigger chunks of it.
They nibble on their bedding, no harm done. Congratualtions on the new babe! Ours need lots of stimulation, cardboard rolls, boxes, wooden and lavastone chewies. ::silly::  It is great you got yours so young, he will bond to you and be just the best! Congratulations again. ;)

Ohh okay thank goodness lol. THanks!! I'm super excited! Since hes only two months old i dont know what to give him to chew on, hes been anxious to chew on something. What can i give him to chew on thats age appropriate? I've been taking him to play in my bathroom and now he is climbing all over me. BUt, as soon as i put him in his cage again, once in a while he'll start scratching at the cage and chewing on the cage to let him out again. Is this really  bad? I felt bad for him so i took him out again, and once i was done playing this time he went back in his cage and he was fine. How long will it be till he bonds with me? And how will i know it? By the way his name is Chinchi  :::grins::
