Dianah,

I could kick myself - for every drop Coal drinks a drop falls to the pine below.  I thought the area was a pee spot but realized that he only pees in one area - not that one!  I feel better now knowing the bottle was the problem!  Thanks again!  I owe you!

Thanks Dianah for the response.  Actually I may have misspoke about the drinking - the other 5 chins will each drink about a 1/3 of what Coal does. Not total like I led to believe!  Yes he is gaining weight - very healthy I might add!  He was a rescue from a Petsmart (we usually use a wonderful breeder (Mt. Zion Chins) but he was calling me when we went in there and My wife really wanted him so home he came.  His environment is perfect - he is in the cool area of the house at all times and gets no overwhelming sunlight on his cage.  He gets tons of exercise.  He just has a drinking problem!!  A good one I hope?  Any other advice?  Anyone?  Just trying to rule out anything.

Thanks again

We saved a 4 month old chinchilla from a pet store and he is in perfect health - great personaility, sleeps well and eats well.  My question is that he drinks a lot of water - we refill his bottle pretty much every day and a half.  Our other 5 chins drink about a third of what "Coal" does (he is a black velvet).  Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Memorials / Re: How do I do it?
« on: June 30, 2008, 08:46:54 PM »
I have unfortunately been there and it is a painful thing to do. It took us a little while but as we talked about it we decided to do what was right for Rocki and not what is best for us.  She didn't deserve to live in pain and not be herself anymore. We had a fun play time with her albeit with tears in our eyes and took herto our vet and let her go.  We had her cremated so she is still around and her toys are here too.  We have replaced her with a rescue who is not a wonderful replacement because you can never truly replace the ones you love but Stella our new chin is getting tons of loveand giving it back 100%!

We have 5 chins in all (ages 4 down to 1 right now) so you just keep on loving them and making sure that they have the best life possible!

I am sorry for your pain and while I can not tell you when you will begin looking back at the memories and thinking about the awesome things you described and not the way it all came to an end.  Your family & chin are in my thoughts.

I CAN NOT believe that you have never noticed them eating their poop? It is a regular as the sun!  I currently have 5 chins but have had 11 total and every one of them did this!  It is definitely a normal activity.   ;)

The bacteria in their poo is very important to their well-being.  Amazing the adaptation animals (an humans) take throughout their existence.

Q & A / Re: flying saucer teaching methods?
« on: February 11, 2008, 04:13:22 PM »
We have never had a problem.  Our newest chins only ran when we went to bed and we would sneak down to "catch them". We recently added a 5th chin and moved the others cage and they have started running 24/7 so maybe they liked the move?

To be totally honest I have never had to train a chin to do anything - they are very intelligent! We havebeen pretty blessed with our 5 so far!

Good luck!

Q & A / Re: Chin upset because I moved his cage...
« on: January 17, 2008, 06:04:57 PM »
Sorry about your situation. We moved our girl Abby a few weeks after we got her but she had become so comfortable with her spot in the family room near the steps leading to the upstairs that she always looked for us and would greet us in the morning when we awoke.  We put her int he living room and she shut down andstopped eating and being her active self. It was truly a great job of pouting but we relented and have enjoyed her in the family room for the past 3+ years. Hard to give into her!

I hope your situation resolves - was he extremely happy in the other location? Did he watch TV?  Maybe that helped him feel comfortable?  We have 5 chins and they all have crazy personalitie!  Sometimes I think that they own the home and we just live with them! Our only boy Max comes out around 6 PM every night for about an hour to visit his girlfriends.  When the clocks changed "his clock" didn't so now at 5 on the dot heris ready to come out!  He is funny.  They are a lot of fun!  Good luck!

Health / Insurance??
« on: April 21, 2007, 07:01:14 PM »
Does anyone have a health insurance policy on your chins?  With all of the health expenses we've endured over the past couple if years I was wondering if any exist that would help chin owners?

Thanks,

General Chat / Re: Wheel modification
« on: February 25, 2007, 09:31:22 AM »
Hi guys - we too are huge Flying Saucer fans but we also have a solid 15" wheel that our chin loves, we made sure it went against one of the walls so that nothing scary could happen to him and he has been without incident for over a year.  He uses the wheel as a way to talk to us too!  "I want attention", "I want to eat", "I want to play" etc...

I bought it from Brisky Pets @ www.brisky.com or directly at

http://www.brisky.com/8/index.php?_fa=viewproduct&id=1306&cid=0

It is a larger up and down wheel but if you can put it in the corner you should be safe.

Health / Re: Rapid Weight loss :(

So happy to hear the good news lauren - I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Unfortunately we did take our Rocki from a pet store.  It is sad knowing what we all know about the quality of chins from pet stores.  She just didn't need to be there and we have been lucky enough to have her for a little over 4 1/2 years. I guess it is just a hollow feeling to realize that the fight is not working and you have to do something drastic.  We go back to the vet on Wednesday - MAYBE we can get lucky but it isn't even close as of this point.

Thanks for the kind thoughts!  I'll keep you all posted on her outcome.

Hi Lauren,

I've been reading the thread all the while in pain myself.  Our chin Rocki has not eaten food in 23 days.  So far we have been the vet 5 times and she has yet to regain her desire to eat.  She had tooth points ground down as well as a wayward tooth trimed off. (She also developed an infection on her gum which hasn't healed yet)  It has failed to help her. So far 3 different antibiotics and 2 pain meds have failed to inspire her.  We have been force feeding her for 20 days with critical care and she has maintained her weight.  She weighed 607 on 10/7 and was 530 when the vet trips started.  She is currently at 481. She refuses to drink and eat still and she rarely ventures out of her cage.  She "curses" at me whenever I go near her because she thinks I am going to catch her to feed her.  My wife and I are basically on watch.  We go back to the vet on Wednesday and may be forced to Euthanize her. This was something the vet has always had on the list and we refuse to put her through a surgery that may not help.  Needless pain is not an answer and he can not guarantee success.  It really stinks.  She is 5+ years old and our oldest of 3 chin. She is also a rescue from a pet store so you know her history is poor.

I will be thinking of you and good luck with your chin Lauren!

P.S.
My advice to chin owners is to love your chins with all your heart and do everything you can but if it doesn't work you have to be less selfish and think of their well-being.

Q & A / Re: Emergency Question
« on: December 24, 2006, 10:24:28 PM »
Wow, what a great question.  I guess it all depends on the Chin's actual brain and if it is affected the same way the human brain is?  I suppose only a Vet could even have the faintest answer on this one!  I would be inclined to say the Chin would be fine!

Keep us informed!

Merry Christmas,

Paul

The happiest holiday is when you include family and chinchillas, especially with FOOD! Haha

Reminds me of when we were at Grandma's house.  She always baked cookies, oatmeal-raisin & peanut butter
