she is healthy but we did loose her cage mate Meekeemoo to a tooth issue . The only vet that could do the dental is over 400 miles from here. A local vet gave me some antibiotics and pain meds while we tried to figure out the logistics of getting there and everything. This was going to be at least an over night stay maybe 2. He died before we could get there. Hopefully she will continue to be healthy for 10 more years.

Thank you GR I appreciate it. I will try and get a better look at the spot on his arm later today . I am going to get some of that powder for the dust bath and right before I give them a dust bath I think I am going to clean the cages . He looks so rough right now.

On the 10cc of criticle care . do you have any idea how many tsp it will take to make that much?

Health / Frustrated .... Help
« on: March 11, 2014, 09:10:08 PM »
OK ... I havent been on much in a few years ... but life does get hectic sometimes and for the last few years my chins have not really had any trouble until recently. My husband and I bought a house and it needed work . We were going to be living in the reno and I didnt think that would be healthy for my chins so my sister said she would take them for a few months while we worked on the house.

My sister and I do not live in the same town . In fact its 3 hours away but she had always been responsible with my animals in the past . So we took her the chins and my birds and a couple of dogs and went to work on the house. I would call and check on my animals and she said all was good.

It took us 2 months to get the house fixed enough for us to move the animals in . We drive to pick them up and it was a nightmare. One of my parakeets was lying dead on the cage floor there was no food or water in the cage and the little female was looking scared. My chins just on a glance looked ok ... in need of a dust bath but other wise well. I am still not real happy about the care she gave them . She dropped the ball on all this .

I get everyone home and set up and over the next few days I observe my chins. My female is doing great but my little guy was looking really bad. There wasnt any sores on him he wasnt drooling but he was really thin . The more I watched I saw her bullying him for the food . I am guessing the sister didnt feed them regular. So I pulled him from the cage and put him in his own . He was eating really slowly.

So we took him to the only vet in the area ( two hours away) that sees chins but they are not experts. I taught the vet tech the proper way to hold a chin and all that . He spent the night and they started him on critical care and took an xray of his head and looked at his teeth . We go to get him the next day and The vet says she couldnt see anything wrong with his teeth . She could send the xray to a vet with more experience for a second opinion . We did that and took him home .

He eats the criticle care up . He tries to eat the kibble and grass. He is so thin and I also noticed what looks like ring worm on his arm . How do I treat for that and does anyone have any ideas on how to get him to gain a little weight? . The expert hasnt gotten back to me yet . Sorry I was so long winded but I just felt like I needed to vent.

Chuppers LOVES cartoon network. MeeKeeMee doesnt watch TV all that much but Chupppers does . She will gripe me out if I change the channel and leave it on something she doesnt like.

I hear some of the strangest noises coming from my guys . Like the dreaming Bark . Which happens when they are asleep . The love song from MeeKeeMoo when CHuppers is in heat . They Squeel from Chuppers when she is angry and MeeKeeMoo and wants him to leave her alone. Its more than likely normal. You will hear some odd things when you have chins.

Health / Re: wasting hay
« on: July 01, 2012, 01:14:52 AM »
Meekeemee will dine on the hay like a proper gentleman . Selecting a nice bit and munching calmly. Chuppers goes for the hay and pushes it all over the place and makes a mess before stuffing her face . I think its pretty common for me anyway to clean the cage and it be more hay than aspen in the bottom LOL.

I have had Rats during the same time I had my chins . Never housed them together in the same cage thats just bad. I just washed my hands real good before dealing with either of them . If I fed the rats I washed my hands and fed the chins etc .

I had Degus too . Thing with Degus are they are messy very very very messy . You need to have them in an aquarium that is fairly large . They can chew through just about anything plastic and they are escape artists. They also need to have a wheel . Mine ran that wheel day and night . You also have to be careful on what you feed them . They are technically diabetics so you have to watch the feed and make sure there isnt any molasses in it . Out of all the animals I have ever had Degus are the only ones to ever bite me . I have had Chins for many years now and they have never bitten me . Rats never bit me . Even My hamster has never bitten me . Degus, a little more high strung for sure. If you get them be prepared . They are soo entertaining to watch but they need special care. Maybe even more so than chins.

General Chat / Re: Advice urgently needed on lone Chinchilla!
« on: July 01, 2012, 12:57:08 AM »
A few years ago I decided My Chuppers needed a buddy. We had up until then believed Chuppers was a male . We even had paper work saying Chuppers was a boy. So when I saw an add for a male chinnie needing a home I jumped on the chance .

However soon as we picked up the new chin his bits and chuppers bits did not match. Chuppers is a girl. Well I didnt give up . I placed their cages next to each others and made arrangements to get Meekeemoo( the male) neutered . Which I did and it was not a good experience. With the help of this very chin community I was able to get him through it .

After he was heal up and all better be started with introductions . It was hard . She didnt like him . Then he was terrified of her. I didnt think it was ever going to work . Then one day I looked up and noticed MeeKeeMoo doing the swish swish dance . Chuppers was in heat and he was wooing her.

So I took her and put her in his cage and they have been together ever since . They sometimes have lovers quarrels. Usually its her barking at him and he ends up on one of the shelves by himself looking dejected. Then you look again and they are cuddled together.

Its not impossible but its alot of hard work that might be for naught. I was ready to have 2 cages if I needed to but it ended up good for me . I do not ever suggest getting a chin spaded or neutered either . That was a horrible experience and I am just so happy MeeKeeMoo does not hold it against me.

That is perfectly normal. My Female has never done it . Joann on here told a story though about how one of her chins used to always get her Husband if he walked in the room and didnt talk to her . They are accurate up to something like 8 feet or so .

Both of mine do that and I usually rub the chest then .
