Cages / Making a cage

Hello, I've had my chin since last August and have him an old cage that is on the small side, But in the fall I will be starting college and the time i will be able to spend with him will be very limited. 
I plan on making him a bigger better cage. Are there any supplies that would be better than others and are there any that I should avoid? 
If there is anything else you think i should know I would love to hear it.
