Well, outside of the change in the shape the day after i saw it, there hasn't been any. It might look a tiny bit smaller, but I can't really tell. If it is smaller the difference is very slight. Unfortunately, I don't have money to take him to a vet with. I know that's not good, and when I bought him I had some saved in case anything ever happened but, life didn't exactly let me keep that laying around. If I can find a way to take him to a vet, will there be anything they can really do to change it, or are they just going to be able to tell me exactly what happened, i.e. cateract or injury ect? If he had lost vision in that eye, he would be a little more clumsy and such right? if i hold my finger in front of him he still follows it with his head until he realizes that theres no treat in my hand lol. Would he have adapted so quickly if it were interfering with his sight? My husband thinks I'm crazy for worrying so much, but how can you not? =)

Hi! I'll try to get some pictures, but it's unlikely. I dont have a camera at all. The black spot is on the outer area of the eye. I just saw it last night before i posted, so definitely hasnt been there since birth. I love his eyes, I look at them every time I hold him. It's a little less then 1/4 the size of his whole eye, and last night it looked circular, but tonight its more like a thick straight line that goes from the outer of the eye into the center. He lives alone, I have another chinchilla but for the two years i've had them both, they still dont get along lol. and they havent been out at the same time because of that in a while. a few weeks at least so i dont think its anything my other baby could have done. My husband says it might be like a blood vessel that busted or something like that. Does that happen to chins? It doesnt seen to bother him at all, he wouldnt let me touch directly around the eye like he sometime does but he doesnt always let me pet him there anyway. although sometimes he does like  a good scratch all around his face =P lol

Hi, i haven't been on this site in a while, but I'm hoping you all might have some idea on what this might be. I have a homo beige little boy. he'll be 2 soon. he has red eyes with a ring of blue in them but on right eye, theres a pretty big dark dot on his eye. i'm really not sure what it is but it freaked me out when i saw it. has anyone ever seen this? is it something i should worry about? any hints at all would be great, i'm worried maybe something is wrong with his eyesight. =(

I think it might help him come around a bit, but be sure that you know that there aren't any promises that the new kit and your louie will get along at all! I bought a younger chin from a breeder that socialized them well in hopes that he and my fiance's chin roger(a petstore chin that wasnt too freindly to humans, very skittish and didnt like to be held at all. very self sufficient and didnt need humans for anything is how he acted lol) would get along, and all his wants to do is attack him lol. luckily i had wanted a chin for almost a year regardless of if he got along with the other one, but from what i understand you should always be prepared to house two separate chinchilla's in two separate cages for the rest of their lives. and like kcchins said, dont forget to quarantine! from what i understand thats really important too. =)

I have one dog, a black lab/chow mix. He's not too friendly towards my chin though, barks a lot, and acts like he wants to pounce on him like he tries to do with mice. I was wondering though, does anyone have any tips on getting my dog to calm it down a bit around my chin? In two months there won't be separate rooms to keep them in.

lol I don't think you're insane, I have dreams about my chin all the time. Typically I'm at the pet store trying to buy more (even though I didnt even buy mine from a pet store) and there's just a ton of them in one little glass cage and it always makes me sad. And in my dreams, the kits are always REALLY tiny. Like half the size they are in real life I think lol. They're always really cute though!

thanks guys, i'll try something like that. he eats mazuri, and i have a cuttlebone in there with him  all the time. plus he gets a supplement from lonestar chinchillas that my breeder recommend. maybe i should try the tums idea though. either way i'll keep an eye on his teeth, i dont want there to be any problems with his teeth, i'd feel so terrible!

from what I've heard chins teeth are supposed to be a dark orange color all over. my chins teeth are white-ish just on the very very side of the teeth. is that okay?

Thanks, I just wanted to make sure it couldn't be some type of illness that I didn't expect or know about. I've been learning about chinchilla's for the last year or so, but that doesn't mean I know very much! lol He's almost 9 months old, and he's not so big I don't think. I don't have anything other then a bathroom scale but he's in between one and two pounds. He's got a large marble piece in his cage, but he hardly ever uses it. He's eating and drinking as usual though, and everything else is going fine, so I guess I won't worry so much. My boyfriend says I worry and baby him too much, but I say he doesn't baby his chinchilla enough! lol Thanks so much

Health / I'm notsure why my chinchilla has such bright red ears sometimes.

So, I know when the ears get red and/or bloodshot, it probably means the chinchilla is too hot. But, my little guy Tonka, lately his ears have been getting red like that when the temperature should be fine for him.  When it happened tonight it was 65ish, maybe just a hint over. It doesn't last very long cause I immediately make it cooler in our room when I notice it happening, and now it's about 60 degrees in here and he looks much better. But this isn't the first time it's happened while its been what I thought and what used to be a okay temperature for him, usually around 65-70. Are there any strange reasons that I don't know about that could be causing him to seemingly over heat in such cool temperatures? This has always been while he's inside his cage being relatively calm. I just don't understand it lol. If anyones got any pointers on what I could be doing wrong or what could be causing it, I'd love to hear it. It's probably something simple I'm just not thinking of, but that's why I love this place, you can be forgetful and everyone here is still very helpful.

I was just wondering, you always hear about the dangers of chinchillas getting to hot but what about to cold? I'm assuming that there is such a thing as too cold for them? I'm just not sure what temperature that would be around. Thanks =)

thanks everyone! i talked to the breeder I got him from and she said that his old cage mate crinkled his whiskers while they were grooming each other. i'm still not sure exactly what happened with his tail, but oh well. he seems to be fine. I'm out of town now but the person i have watching him says that he's even getting a little more coordinated! so I guess he was just slow or something when it came to being sur eon his feet. again thanks so much, i was a little worried! lol

Q & A / Whiskers!

Hey, I was wondering if anyone could help me out a bit. I got my chinchilla, Tonka, a little over a week ago, and I never thought much of it, but his whiskers are kind of messed up looking. Like, my other chinchilla Roger's whiskers are perfectly straight and very long, but Tonka's are kind of bent. Crinkled would be a better word to describe it I guess. Is that normal? I heard that with other small animals it can throw off thier balance if the whiskers are messed up, and I was wondering if anyone new if that was true with chins too? He doesnt seem to be very coordinated like the other chinchilla, Roger. So I don't know. And he's got a pretty short tail, do they always have really short tails when they're 5 months? I guess they probably do, it just seems wierd lol. Sorry if this souned stupid, I'm just curious! Thanks =)
