Introducing an rescue/older chinchilla to younger one
I have been hoping to get a companion for Mei Mei ever since I bought him, he is now 5-6 month old now and has finally warmed up to me alot.

Since buying him I noticed another chinchilla(about 2 hrs old) that was given to the pet shop (he's un wanted sevrely stressed pulled out his hair and everything)

Pic and story of him
http://crazisilverangel.blogspot.com...think.html?m=1

I visit him 2-4 times a month. He's gone from angry bald loner to hair grown back, super curious and much more livelier and enjoys scratches behind the ear =)!!

Since then I've been saving up to buy him. I have arranged a meeting in play pin for the two.

So my question is, is the play pen at all a good idea?
Is that even safe? Because I didn't quarantine the rescue myself? Do I risk MeiMei health?
Will that at all determine if it would be a good match?
Because I know the first thing they show is aggression, which usually doesn't mean anything because over time they realize they don't need to be like that.

How should I go about this?
if the play pen was successful
I should...
Take care of the rescue in another room/cage
Once warmed up to me and vet checked I should

Here is where it gets fuzzy
Have play dates?
Have cages in view of each other? Close to each other ?
Put the cage in to the cage?

Ideas?
Is ther anything special I need to do for the rescue?
Is there anything I need to do because he is older then my current one?
I heard a car ride together really helps with bonding? Is that in the same or separate cage?

Q & A / Potty training madness
« on: August 17, 2011, 01:47:09 PM »
I never knew why my chinchilla never really use his potty

If anything he would pee right in front of it and or around it instead of in it

Always which was on his grass... The other day his hay box arrive .. I attached a little bit high on the wall...
The next morning I find pee stains on the cage wire wall and a wet shelf corner

Now I understand that be wants to pee on grass

And it's not like I don't put the wet bedding in his potty too!!!

Ideas people??

Muchly appreciated
Viki

Q & A / Tail flicking
« on: August 14, 2011, 01:47:06 AM »
My chin flicks his tail when he's out chasing his towel

He did it in his cage one day as well

The tail flicking usually also comes with this odd laughing sound... Does anyone know if this a stressed out sign or happy sign ?? Or what does it mean ?

Health / Pulsating or hiccuping ?
« on: July 28, 2011, 10:16:06 PM »
Meimei is moved in to the basement since summer started because I don't have air con
The basement is a good 18-21 degrees (I'm in Vancouver this summer hasn't been too hot)

Today while hanging out with him, he stood on his branch and look like he's pulsating Or hiccuping I couldn't tell..
.... I don't know what to think or what it is..
His ears and paws weren't hot either

Health / Tired ness
« on: July 25, 2011, 12:30:33 AM »
I think meimei is about 3-4 months old
I usually take him for about hour free run time a day

But lately he seems tired after about 30mins and today he litterally almost fell asleep on his side on the tub, usually after he finnishes running he takes naps in his cage

Should I be concerned?

my last chinchilla had a hay wire rack sort of thing... i never really like it but it works

but seeing the replies of other people my last chinchilla i believe mine died most likely getting his foot caught in the shelves (was wire flooring) most likely fell down struggling and broke a rib... i came home from school in time to say good bye.... anything with wires especially bendable wires.. are super dangerous

..8 yrs later i bought one with wooden shelves~!

this time around i've been searching and found this cute little number
http://www.chincessories.com/cageaccessories.htm

if you scroll down mid way you'll see a nice and pretty hay box

provided if your chin doesn't like eating cage furniture (mine doesn't seem to have interest in his own stuff) could last you for sometime ^_^!

i'm not so worried of him biting the corners of the  bathroom i'm more afraid the fact he's eating some sort of wood paint plaster? hope it wont effect his health??

when I stick my arm in his cage, he jumps on it

his pawing digging thing sometimes makes me wonder if he's trying to hump my hand or something... dont they usually mount kind of grabing at the risk or something?

i notice today when he does the pawing digging thing on the towel and biting it he makes this kind of laughing noise @_@.... going mental?

we play this game where i shake the towel and charges at it and jumps around it, he gets reallly into it sometimes and makes this kind of laughing sound...

would this be a bad game ... meaning is he actually attacking the towel and its makes him more aggressive?

sometimes we play chase the towel or towel chasing him ..

I'm starting to notice Mei Mei is getting to be worst and worst behavior

Kinda of untrusting and when on his run, he won't focus on exploring but instead biting everything like the corner of the wall/cabinet door/ bathtub

I push him slightly away he rush over attempt to I think bite me

I'm not doing ne thing and he'll come up to my arm, do this kind of digging scratching thing on me and nip me

sometimes im giving him a nice scratch suddenly he doesn't like it and tries to bite me

I'm wondering if he's like this because I check his teeth often or have a look at his genitals (hair rings)
He puts up quite a struggle

Could all this be because of me checking on him

Health / Suddenly small poop? Cause for concern?
« on: June 26, 2011, 02:38:45 PM »
earlier I worried about him biting his pellets to dust

But now he has a nice squeshy tummy, no more worries

But this morning when I woke up I notice his poop is half the size it was last night.
His new chew toys he's gotten recently
Vine chew toy and pumice rock

Otherwise everything is the usual fresh hay/pellets water every 2 days
And bedding change every 3-4 days

Ideas??

Or its like human ... Sometimes we have small poop ?

Last question.. I was recommended Mazuri pellets but i realize now it saids on the package.. It saids "alfafa meal"
Isn't that suppose to be bar for them if eaten daily ?

Health / Chewing pellets to dust?
« on: June 15, 2011, 01:46:17 AM »
I recently bought a chinchilla from a pet shop.. I know we're all suppose to buy from a breeder but I couldn't resist! I always go in to have a look and hold and pet one but this one just completely stole my heart, I was not willing to let this one go for some reason.

they told me when I got him he's about a month and 2 weeks old now he is almost 2 months old now

I personally think he's way to young to be by himself...

anyhow.. when I got him I thought he was ridiculously skinny and tiny now that I've had him for 2weeks he's gain weight and looks ALOT bigger then 2 weeks ago (thank god)

what worries me is him not eating his food, I bought him Mazuri pellets , I give him enough for two days and then refill ......how ever when it comes time to refill i have a pile powdered pellets in his dish.

I dont even know if he's eating it, he's getting fatter and bigger
would that mean he's just eating hay or hay and pellets?

I'm attempting to give him more chew toys but he sometimes only sometimes chew on it

two weeks ago i had a smaller cage for him (because he could fit through the bars of bigger cage i got him later on)he didn't even chew on the bars, I practically have a new cage with no chipped paint or anything

he's got several apple sticks, lava rock ledges, wooden house and wood shelves to bite on, he does chew on them sometimes
i'm very surprised he doesn't chew and destroy everything like my last chinchilla (he chewed on his cage like someones plucking at their guitar strings)

i check his teeth often, they're even ....top is shorter then the bottom nice yellow orange

should i be a worried??

thanks in advance
worried mommy
=(

just in case you wanted to see him =P
