I also agree with the previous posts. The mom and baby should be separated and the baby should be weaned around 8 weeks. You do not want any fighting or mating.

Wow- everyone has been busy it sounds like.
We have been busy here too. My son started 1st grade and it's his first year in year round schools so his first day was July 7th (I think) and he already had one of his 3 week breaks. Its been different.
We also got married August 10th in Asheville and enjoyed a week long honeymoon in a cabin.
We bought our house earlier this year and have been doing a lot of work around here. We had a building built for our chinchillas and are working to get it completed so they can move in before the end of the year.
Work at the animal hospital has been very busy... VERY busy. We had been short employees for months so were over worked. I just went to part time so I can pick up my son from school and be more of a mom around here. We got behind on the house since I was so tired from working so much. Its getting much better around here now.
The chins have been doing very well. 12 babies this year so far! they have kept me busy and we are very proud of them.
Unfortunatly I am having to miss the 1st Empress Meeting in our area because of work- I am very sad and hope to see you all at the next meeting. The Shoots had asked us to go and I am so sorry we are having to miss it! Everyone will have to fill me in.

Stories like this scare me to death. I watched the ExtreameHome Makeover Sunday night in tears knowing what soilders go through and the fact that I was fortunate enough not to deal with having a loved one do what they do. I would be a wreck.
I'm sorry to hear of such a thing happening to anyone.. let alone.. a family member.

It's been a while for me to be able to post much and I want to say sorry! BUT.. I think after this post with pictures of cute lil kits nobody will mind me taking so long!
Here are some babies who were born here since I've been MIA.
V1 and V2 born 5/30/08:

I am so sorry to hear about all that happened. Feel free to vent all you want.
I work in an animal hospital and we actually had to put a dog to sleep today because he bit his owners kids and had a history of biting. Its very sad... I can imagine.
I know huskys actually have a rep of aggressive behavior. We have to muzzle most of them to work with them.. to protect us.
Sometimes dogs can just turn.. even on their owners. Sorry you had to make a decision like that but if a dog becomes untrustworthy its just to much of a chance.. be it children or your chins or yourself.
Don't beat yourself up over it. You did the right thing and something even worse was prevented from happening.

Some chins just have attitudes. If you want to blow in their face you can, and it may work. The girl I have who does bite (not hard at all.. just is quick to nip and then sniffs me after) blowing doesn't make a bit of difference. She only is like this when shes pregnant.. so I just simply say "Ouch, Sugar, biting is bad." or something, and dependng on her mood I either scratch her or leave her be. Now with wiggling blowing may work.. but all animals are different, once again. All my animals are very well tempered.. only one likes to act kind of bad- and shes pregnant (so she has the right to ) and if someone does not want to be held I don't force them to be. Wiggling while grooming can be fixed in other ways. (setting them on your lap or having someone hold their ear, ect.)

I have heard once you start having a chins teeth filed or trimmed you have to continue to take them. He may not be chewing b/c it hurts him- but a vet should be able to look into that further. Try giving him something new to chew on and see if he shows interest. Any safe wood, search the internet for people who sell cute things that chins chew. I myself get Popsicle sticks, boil them, bake them and my chins LOVE it. I would say try something new first.. the vet may have to look further for an underlying problem if that doesn't help.

You think she's been pregnant for 3 months?? I am confused you have a july due date? Anyways- unless you KNOW they mated you won't know how far along she is. All chins are different.. some gain A LOT and some gain a little. Weigh her less often.. every 3 or 4 weeks or so.. if you really want to keep up with it. A pregnant chin will gain weight more rapid in her last month. By then you could gently hold your hand under her belly and feel for movement. (some say once you feel movement it could be a few weeks) A few of my chins were 'due' April 9th and April 22 and STILL no babies. I now feel movement (have for almost 3 weeks) and can see movement.. but I quit weighing them because 1- they got more irritable and 2-they don't need the added stress. I now know they are coming soon.. I quit trying to put a due date on them. I just keep up w/when the hole is opened and they had access to the male.. and know when to start to expect them.

Congrats on those little critters I live in central NC (didn't know you lived here too!) but don't need any more animals! LOL. I have a sister who was obsessed with getting a hairless rat at one time but she never ended up getting one for one reason or another. I would love to see pictures so I could show her tho!

every one of my chins loves to be scratched and will sit and beg for their turn. Thats my secret to win a chin over.. they love it and it works.
