« on: September 22, 2011, 08:11:56 AM »
i think that is the case of a later mateing because there are still no kits. very frustrating her nipples are elongated and she is spending a lot of time laying on her side. on friday we her side move which definately looked like it was a baby moving.

Breeding 101 / pregnant chin due 3 days ago still no babies

i witnessed my chins breeding on the 28th of may i didnt find a breeding plug so wasnt sure if she was pregnant untill i could feel her elongated nipples and she has gained weight. her due date should have been this weekend but there are still no signs of labour at all. i witnessed the baby/s move in her belly on friday evening and she has stopped eating as much but no signs of anything just laying around and resting.
what are the normal signs of impending labour? if there anything i can do to make her more comfortable? :-\

welcome! i am new here 2 i bought my first chinchilla from a privately owner pet shop. he was in a really bad way they sold him as a 1 year old and he was about 8 when i bought him. he had a broken tail, going blind, was bald from fur biting and had bleeding feet and ears.
thank goodness that disgusting place has now closed and sadly my chin gizmo passed away last year. at least he had a few years with us being spoilt and loved.
other chin owners can be a great source of information also the internet but always get a second opinion if you are not sure. ;)

my chins also have to be fed in order my wilson white female is on her own and loves attention so she must be fed first, she knows its dinner time. then my grey male and black velvet must be fed otherwise they bicker and my male gets really stroppy. then last but never least my breeding pai who have fantastic manners and im trying to tame my male as he is very shy i dont think the previous breeder handled him at all.
my wilson white female refuses to eat any human food and if you dare to offer it to her shes shrieks and threatens to spray you!

Memorials / my first chin love Gizmo
« on: September 07, 2011, 02:51:54 PM »
my rescue boy gizmo
that day i walked into the pet shop i saw a dirty cage on the shelf, i peered inside only to find a dirty scruffy matted fluff ball cowering in the corner. in those few seconds i knew i was going to take you home. i raced home and prepared your cage and went back and collected you.
it had been some years since i had owner a chin as a child. you were a little timid but you soon warmed to us and were very keen to just be held and have a cuddle. i took you to a vet who told me you were an old chap, you were going blind, your tail had a nasty kink where it had been broken, you were bald all over your chest from fur biting and you feet were scabbed and bleeding and you had chewed and bleeding ears.
i was so heart broken by what they had done to you and what you had been through.
we nursed you back to health all your fur grew back you were so happy. you really did enjoy our company but i knew you were lonely we bought you home a male cage friend called gadget. you became inseparable the best of friends.
a few years went by and you always remained so friendly often sharing a piece of fruit or toast with me and a kiss.
one day i came home and you weren't right you had been loosing weight after a trip to the vets and some antibiotics you went on another few months.
one summers day i came home from work and you weren't moving laying in your fleece bed, i knew you had given up gadget was sitting next to you peeping and nudging you.
we took you straight to the vet nestling you in my arms each breath you took becoming harder and harder. you could not even lift your head. you fell asleep July 2009. i still miss you so much sleep tight my sweetest wee man xxxxx  :::(((

Guestbook / new chin breeder from London England
« on: September 07, 2011, 12:53:34 PM »
:) hi folks I'm I'm 24 and have owned chinchillas for the last 6 years i started off with rescuing a beige male called gizmo from a pet shop he was in such a bad state, broken tail, bald from fur biting, blind, bleeding feet and ears. i couldn't leave him there i took him home and he was adorable so friendly almost as if he was grateful. he was quite old when i got him i reckon on at least 8 or 9 sadly 2 years ago his health quickly took a turn for the worse and the vet couldn't help and he passed.
i still have his cage mate we bought to keep him company a standard Grey male gadget who is paired with one of our females a charcoal female Maizy.
i have a wilson white female molly who is on her own as her standard grey cage mate Maggie passed last year.
my most recent members are a breeding pair violet female Rosie and standard Grey male Timmy.
Rosie is expecting a litter or kits very soon within the next week or so. I'm very excited for the preparation of their arrival.
i also have other pets a German Shepard who is scared of my chins and 2 horses Ive had for 16 years.

Breeding 101 / pregnant female 1st time breeder
« on: September 07, 2011, 12:37:45 PM »
hi all i am a first time breeder i bought a proven breeding pair of chins 6 months ago and my violet female i think is definitely pregnant, i witnessed breeding on 29th may and this then she has become lethargic and her tummy is more round and solid. i have felt her nipples and they are elongated.
i have a wire thickets cage that is customised for breeding so i can separate the male.

i would really like to know what is the best way to prepare the cage for the birth and kits?
how long approximately could she be in gestation?
i have been told to put a sheet of cardboard on the base of the cage floor to stop the kits legs from going through the wire holes,
Do i need any bedding? i have a nesting box.
when should i stop her sand baths. ;)
