Q & A / Re: Question about different hay choices.

Well, we use Alfalfa cubes.  As for the loose hay.  We haven't had a problem with them and we have 7 chins

Q & A / Question about different hay choices.
« on: January 07, 2012, 09:03:41 PM »
First, I will say, thank you in advance for any and all help.

Right now, I feed Oxbow Orchard Grass Hay.  I cannot feed any kind of Timothy because of allergies.  I was wondering if chinchillas like a variety or if they usually only want one kind of grass?  I was thinking about ordering some KMS Hayloft Blue Grass to maybe mix with the Orchard or to give every other day, etc.  I was wondering if this would be a good idea.  I have 7 chins so they go through a lot of grass, and I am trying to give them a little variety in the hay... if they would like a variety anyways. LOL.

If they do not like variety, do you think one kind of hay is better than the other. Bluegrass over Orchard?

Sorry if this is confusing.

Cages / Ferret Nation Habitat Model 181, 182, 183
« on: September 29, 2011, 01:41:59 AM »
Hi I am new to Chinchilla keeping and I was thinking about getting a baby around the first of the year.  I just adopted Jake who is 1 1/2 years old.  I would like the new baby to go in the same cage, so I would be looking for a male, but I know potentially that they may not get along.

So, my question is...  If you buy a Ferret Nation Habitat, whether I get the single 181 model with the 183 addition or I get the 182 double unit, is there a way to keep the separated instead of using the middle floor with a ramp and hole?  I just want to make sure if I buy a new cage that I will be able to house both chinchillas in it.  Whether they get along or not (we are going to hope that they do, but sometimes it just isn't meant to be).

Any help would be appreciated!

Q & A / Re: New Mommy Needs Advice
« on: September 27, 2011, 01:31:31 PM »
Thanks for your reply.  I had no idea I could give him shredded wheat.  He is almost 2 years old.  He was born in January of 2010.  Not sure what day but know it was January 2010.  I do have some oats that I give him every once in a while.

Q & A / New Mommy Needs Advice
« on: September 27, 2011, 12:06:11 PM »
Hi Everyone!

I am new to chinchilla and was needing some advice on a few things.

I was wondering how much a chinchilla sleeps?  Jake has been sleeping almost all the time.  I was up until about 4:30 a.m. last night and he wasn't that active.  Does it sometimes take them a little while to get used to their environment?  We just got him on Saturday.  Also, is it okay to wake them up during the day for a little play time, or should I wait until night time, which I would still probably be waking him up then as well.

Also, what kind of treats are healthy.  I give raisins.  Not many I think he has had 2 so far total.  I was wondering if there was anything I could give on a more daily basis.  I have a young child who loves to give him snacks, but I haven't really let her because I am not sure how much he can have.

Any advice would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Guestbook / Re: New Chin Slave :-)

My names Sarah and I have just homed a gorgeous 5 yr old chin boy called Mr Nibbles (to change, feel a bit silly calling it out!) :) Completely new to Chinchillas and have only a vague idea what I'm doing but he seems to be happy and healthy!

I had to laugh at this. When we got our chinchilla recently his name was Mr. Krabs.... I had to change it.  I could not go around calling out Mr. Krabs.  Just doesn't sound right.  His name is now Jake, a lot of the times he gets Jakey and Jakers as well.

I am also new to the forum, so welcome and I hope we both learn a lot here!

Guestbook / Newly Adopted Chinnie In the House!
« on: September 27, 2011, 11:34:44 AM »
Hi everyone. Just wanted to stop in and tell you all a little about me and my little family.  I am married to my best friend, cliche I know, but true all the same.  I have a 3 year old daughter who is in Preschool.  I am also a gymnastics and bowling mommy.  And if she has a say in it we will be adding Soccer to that.

A little information on our critter kids:

We just adopted Jake, the chinchilla.  He is a standard gray male.  We are very new to chinchillas.  I have always wanted one and the opportunity presented itself and I could not turn it down.  We also have 4 female guinea pigs.  Lula, Issa, Jada and Zima.  Jada and Zima are our new babies we picked up at the same time as Jake, which was on Saturday.

A little information about our set up:

Bedding:  We are using fleece. That is what we use for our guinea pigs and we love it.  So far in Jake's cage we love it as well.  I think it helps that we have already used it for this.
Hay:  Oxbow Orchard Grass, as I am allergic to Timothy Hay.  We also use Alfalfa blocks.
Food:  We are using what the rescue gave us, which is Mazuri.  We plan to switch to Oxbow in the near future.  That is what we use for the guinea pigs and it is a brand we trust.
Cage:  We converted an old dog crate into the cage.  We asked the rescue and they said it was big enough.  It is 36 inches long, 23 high and 22 wide.  We have ledges and fiddlesticks in there for him to climb on.
Dust Bath:  We have the Lixit Brand Blue Cloud Dust.  We used the pre-measured packet of sand dust stuff the rescue gave us and we do not like it.  I think it is the Super Pet Brand.  We have a Lixit Dust Bath.  He really likes his baths.  They are very entertaining to watch.
Temperature:  We are keeping the temperature anywhere from 65 degrees Fahrenheit to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. We have been watching for signs that he is getting hot when it gets to around 75 but we have not seen any.  The window is open and there is a nice breeze, so maybe that is helping.

I am really hoping for advice, suggestions, etc.  As I am really new to this and hope I am doing the right things as of now.  Anything is appreciated.
