So my Mosaic F. Chin is a nice word for BRAT.......My Standard Grey recently passed away and they lived together happily. So we decided to get another Standard thinking she would be lonely. My mosaic was with her mom before I received her and went straight in with my Standard with no issues.. Now she's a biting terror and spraying!!! UGH....Any ideas on what I could do for her to get along with the new chinnie???

All suggestions are welcome!

I remember doing some research on this myself and coming to some conclusions. As you know the different mutation colors are caused because the parents carry genes that are different from the natural grey (agouti) color pattern of a wild chinchilla. When all of the genes are properly copied there are no changes but sometimes things go wrong and you get a gene (that is passed on) that is unusual and can be exploited by breeders. Mutations usually have a non-effect or a detrimental effect on mammals and their effects may go beyond color and reach other biochemical processes within each cell that you don't see.

Some mutated genes don't cause any harm when they are inherited (the white or black gene, for instance) from one side but result in the failure of the embryo to develop into a viable chinchilla when they are inherited from both sides. These genes are said to have "lethal factors". In other animals certain mutations when bred together can result in a high prevalence of birth defects or even lethal factors so it's good to know what you're doing before you try to breed domestic animals of any kind.

Certain colors result from breeding chinchillas with these genes that have lethal factors to get the desired result so you should know what the chinchilla's lineage is before you breed. Although there is some debate on whether or not harm is caused to the pregnant female if the lethal factors are combined, it is considered bad practice especially since you lower or even eliminate your potential to get a pregnancy. The worst case is you get a miscarriage or a partially developed embryo. This can cause several morbid complications including an infection from the dead fetus decaying in the womb which is fatal, or solidification of the fetus in a uterine horn that in and of itself is not dangerous but could lead to other complications later.

It is also important to note that the lethal factor for white is different than that of black. So you can breed a black to a white but not a black to a black or a white to a white. Other genes such as beige can be bred together but it is common to breed a beige to a white so again best practice is breed chinchillas with pedigrees so you know what is in the line.

I was browsing around online and found this site that said you CANNOT breed white with white, brown with brown or black with black...Per the website it said there could be some "SERIOUS" issue's if you do this it could cause a lethal gene?

I've tried looking MORE into this and unfortunately cannot find any info on it. I was hoping someone here could help me shed some sight on this?

Thank you! your comments have helped a lot! I'm sad that MOST of the websites I have seen a lot of their products are dyed - I'm used to Mulberry toys that have Pumice Stones, Hay cubes, things more "NATURAL" - I've seen where you can also buy the parts and make your own? Not sure if thats a better deal or not.

We "Hubby and I" are planning to make a handful of Pine Ledges - since we will be getting (2 Male Velvet's) tomorrow! VERY Excited!! We currently have a Female Standard and a Female Mosaic!!

Anyway thanks for the help its much appreciated!

I've been lurking around here for a little while and have not posted yet. BUT I'm a bit upset my FAVORITE chin toy/supplies website is now GONE ... Yup GONE and GONE forever!!! So Crappy...  I have been searching around and haven't come across anything that I like.

Do you guys have any suggestions? Where do you get your Chew Toys/Foot Toys from??

well the assumed spider bite wound has now healed - that was on her neck area under her chin - now she's been biting at her inner arms and her bottom jaw teeth area "literally her bottom teeth area s just a patch of baldness"  no bumps or anything - she's currently on antibiotics, anti - inflammatory med and a cream to sooth the area..The vet is running out of ideas..I'm on here looking for answers more so suggestions on what should be done??!! Not sure what else it could be??

Health / Lesions on my Chin

Hello All!

I had a chin for 8 years - my sister now has her since I decided that bringing her to CA would be to long of a trip for an 8 year on chinny "She's now 13 years old" -- Anyways, recently she has a lesion on her neck what I would have guessed it to be a Spider Bite? That is now healed up. She is now chewing at her arms and her Bottom Jaw Area where her bottom teeth are which is now bald. Has anyone had anything like this happen before? I'm now staring to think she may have some teeth in the back that are infected and need to be extracted? If you've had something similar happen pleeeeeeease let me know! My sister is planning to bring her back to the vet so they can re-check her mouth again. But my poor baby just sits in her cage all day and just chews at herself and squeaks! We need to figure this out before she gets to stressed out and passes away since she's so old!
