Q & A / Re: What color is he?

Thanks that's what I thought. He's got the speckles on his ears just like the Hetero beige description says.

Q & A / What color is he?

My new chinchilla is a pet store chin as the breeder I was going to adopt from seemed to have fallen off the face of the earth and refused to return my phone calls.

Being a pet store chin I have no idea what his background is, what his genetics are like and I have a vet appointment schedules to check his overall health.

But I'd like to know what color you guys think he might be. He was marked as a violet at the pet store but his color is VERY diluted and he doesn't really look like the pictures of violets that I've seen.

He also has a white belly.

Based on the descriptions and the pictures on this page

my best guess would be diluted hetero beige but I have noooooo idea.

Cages / Re: Cage Question

The critter nation and ferret nation cages are wonderful high quality cages. I used a single critter nation cage for my rats that my new chin has moved into.

Q & A / Re: The pee smell!

His pee no longer smells. I did read that when they are stress out or dehydrated that their pee may smell. Now that he's settled in it doesn't really stink anymore.

Q & A / The pee smell!

I just got a chinchilla. He's in his cage settling in. I'm leaving him a lone because he's pretty freaked out. He just pottied in his litter box (yay!) but my goodness nobody told me how strong their urine smells. So I have a few questions. Is it normal for their urine to have a strong smell? And what's the best way to eliminate or at least control the smell? Obviously I want something that is safe for my chinchilla?

I'm currently using carefresh natural in the litter box since that's what I use for my mice and my rats and it always worked really good for the rats but rat pee doesn't really smell to begin with. The smell has dissipated a little bit but it's still very much apparent in the room.
