« on: April 01, 2013, 07:39:12 PM »
Hello Everyone! I just wanted to make this post so people could say:

1. How many chins do you have currently? 7 of my own and 2 babies

2.What are some of your chins names? Jill, Jack, Joy, J.D., Joe, Jewel, Jay Jay, Jo Ann, Jackie, Jaden Including mine whom have passed away...there have been many babies also

3. What do you like most about chins?  I love everything about my chinchillas!

I have had chinchillas and have been breeding them since 2009.  I love them and know more about them than some scientists I think.  What's not to love???

General Chat / Re: Stressed chinchilla?

They need to be separated.  The stress is coming from being scared of the other chinchilla.  Make sure you wipe the corner of the eyes out after the chin takes a dust bath.  They could be keeping their eyes open while taking a dust bath an blocking their eye ducts.

The dining room table maybe too high up for your chinchilla. Text me from experience you do not want them to end up breaking their foot or their leg. It is not fun to have to amputate and see your poor baby chinchilla go through that. Yes there are many things you can do. Sometimes I left mine run around the room however I learned the hard way also that they can get into even the tiniest spaces. Shortly after I got my first chinchilla 4 years ago, she went and found a spot to hide and was lost for 12 hours. It was not fun thinking that I had lost her. So make sure she is in a small confined space with absolutely no place for him or her to hide. You can also use simple cardboard boxes as a way for them to have something to run and jump on. They are paper products so they will to them but its very expensive and they have more fun with that then an expensive toy or wooden jumping stone you could buy for them. Now that I have a new apartment I actually have a child gate across my steps and I left the chinchillas run and jump on the steps. Since they are originally from the Andes Mountains in South America had a naturally love to jump on different levels so this works out well for me. I hope this helps.

Q & A / Re: Second Chinchilla Issues
« on: April 01, 2013, 07:18:26 PM »
Put their cages next to each other for a couple of weeks or so. Then you can introduce them to each other very slowly while being present for a little while after that. There is still no guarantee that they will get along especially if they are not the same age and did not go up together from little on. This has to be done very delicately and trust me from experience cannot always be done. Chinchillas can end up hurting or even killing each other even if they are lifelong cage mates after 15 years. There is really no predictable way to let you know this. Maybe you should not have gotten want to be friends with it and or you may just have to keep them separate.

Q & A / Re: HELP please! Baby Chin that mom won't nurse
« on: April 01, 2013, 07:17:43 PM »
Use cats milk instead and to get the dad out of the cage. If the parents decide to mate, they will step on the baby , killing it.  The dad should always be separated as soon as the babies are born but not before because they assist with keeping the new babies warm while the mother is birthing the rest of the litter.  My suggestion would be to leave the dad with the baby for two months and continue to hand feed as well as put chin food in the cage since the baby will start eating it in about two weeks. But still continue to hand feed the cats milk until one and a half to two months.
