Health / Re: Hair rings
« on: February 03, 2013, 12:23:39 PM »
Generally, from what I have noticed with my 6 boys, is on the regular, I find them with their penis out cleaning it. I would watch for this behavior (from what I have seen during the day). If you see this, then I would see no problems with possible hair rings. If he is doing this then he should not get any hair rings. From what I have learned chins are normally pretty good with taking care of that type of things themselves.

One of my chinchillas is borderline retarted, but really agile. Some of the others are crafty and like to play mind games and some of the other ones are social and understand what I am doing and why.

I have 6 boys.

4 in one cage together and 2 in another cage together.

The 4 are Fluff (white mosaic), Milk Dud (brown velvet), Ratatouillie (standard), and Stitch (standard, violet carrier). All 4 are 10-12 months.

The 2 are Casper (homo tan or beige sapphire carrier) and Smokey (standard sapphire carrier). They are both 5-6 months.

I like their unique behavior and the fact that you never know what is coming next. Some of them have really neat personalities. When I open the cage door, sometimes Casper gets so excited that he pop-corns out of the cage.

Cages / Re: Sturdy cage for 2 rambunctious chins

I have two Quality Cages, they are great. I have a Chin Spin in each.

You have to remember that Chin Spin is after all made by the same people who make Quality Cages, this being said they are more than compatable.

I would choose Quality Cage. I have the same complaint as chinclub though. But, quality cage does sell bedding guards to keep the bedding in.

I'd say yes but be quick about it. You can pick him up and hold him until he quiets down (no more than about 20 seconds) then put him back. If he doesn't quiet down and is extremely stressed and fighting the whole time then maybe he's not tame enough for that. Do this three times a day and it will help with taming. This method worked with mine.

They are fine once they are in my grasp, they just arent too happy while we are getting to that point, most of the time. Sometimes they come fine.

Yes.  As they bond more with you it will stop.  Just be sure you don't ever leave them alone when they do that.  Its like having a puppy that growls at you.  If you back off they learn that they are the boss and the behavior gets worse.

What do I do if they run away while making the noise? Do I still keep after them?

thanks!

well, you can buy nice ones at tjschinchillasupplies.com

I always see it as easier to pay someone to do it as opposed to spending time to do it.

Ok, cool, when they do that I either pick them up or scratch them on the chin hahah.

Thanks for the advice!

Hey everyone:

My two new chins Casper and Smokey (boys) are nice, but still a little timid, I think. They are 4-5 months old and I have had them for about a month and a half.

When I open the cage door, they start making this little whiney noise (sometimes) and if I reach in (slowly) to pet them they kack and make these throat sounding noises and stand up on their hind legs. But, they both like being scratched under the chin. Most of the time, I can manage to scratch them and they stop.

Whats funny is they make all of these noises at me (seems like they are upset with me) when they are inside of their cage, but if I set them ontop of their cage to run around or if I  have them out for playtime, they do not make such noises.

During all occasions they both take treats from me.

Do you think they are making their noises since I am invading their home?
Thanks!

Have you tried Quaker Old fashioned oats from the grocery store?  Chins love those. I used to have a recipe for a supplement with oats, wheat germ, alfalfa pellets, and clovite. Do you have a farm feed store near you? Clovite(powdered vitamin) or Calf Manna would be good. Chins love both. Alittle is all you need.  Just a few pellets of calf manna a day as a treat OR less than 1/4 teaspoon of clovite on food twice a week. OR dust the clovite on the Quaker Oats and give 1/4 teaspoon of that twice a week.  You will need a store that sells those by the pound not by the bag.  (sorry if this post has errors. I am using my phone and im a terrible texter)

Is 1/4 teaspoon of clovite per chin? I have 4 in 1 cage and 2 in another cange (so 1 teaspoon and 1/2 teaspoon?).

Thanks!
