Health / Re: Pink White with weeping, sore looking eye?
« on: December 22, 2014, 11:07:28 AM »
Hello,

He's not had a dustbath since I noticed his eye, it doesn't look much better today but I've bathed it (whilst he shook the whole time!!) and if it's the same tomorrow then I'm going to take him to the vets. Since the bathing it has opened slightly.

In himself he seems fine, he is his normal, overly-active self.

I will keep you all updated!

Ah ok, thanks so much!

I'll keep an eye on it then and see what happens, if it's still the same on Monday then I'll get him to the vets.

Thanks again!

Health / Pink White with weeping, sore looking eye?

Hello,

So today when cleaning out my Chins I noticed that my pink white, Casper, had his eye slightly closed.
Basically his eye is semi-closed and weeping a little bit, do any of you have any idea what could be causing this?

He's a very nervous Chin and tends to shake when you have to pick him up so I'd like to avoid the vets unless completely neccessary as I'm really scared as to how he might react and handle the stress. I feel like I'm between a rock and a hard place!
I have another Chin in a separate adjacent cage who is absolutely fine and bright eyed and bushy tailed.

So any advice or suggestions?

This is his other eye which looks absolutely fine!

General Chat / Update on HRH (His Royal Henry) & Casper!
« on: September 10, 2012, 05:57:09 PM »
Hello all!

So I have not posted in a while and I thought that I'd just give you all a little update on the boys, although be warned as there is a picture overload!
So Henry is his usual regal self, spending his days eating, gnawing and general basking around.
Casper on the other hand has changed a lot, he has become a lot more confident and tame. He will now clamber all over me and have the odd cuddle, all on his terms! He is also getting huge, however he still has A LOT of growing left if he wants to rival HRH.

So now the fun bits, the pictures!! :D
Most of these were taken earlier this evening although some are from a few days ago :)

Henry:

I think that someone enjoyed his calcium stick! :D

Worn out after playtime!

Casper:

So pleased with little Casper's progress, he is doing so well! :D

So I have a bit of a stockpile of pictures of Henry so I thought that I would share some of my favorites for you all to see! :D

^Presumably praying for more raisins.

^Snacktime! Just so you all know he doesn't eat all that, I just grab a large handful so that fussypants can chose his favorites!

^Raisins for me?

And one of my favorites....

BUDDHA CHIN! :D

Sorry for the image overload! :)

Ps. Precious' foot is all healed, it only took a day! And here's me convincing myself that it's bumblefoot and that I will have to insist that the vet comes to my house as I cannot have dearest little Henry getting too stressed!  ::)

Ok, so I have done a bit of posting as of late however I have realized that I haven't actually introduced the Chins. So here they are! :D

Henry (aka. Babachin, His Royal Henry, Fatchin, Wideload etc.):

Casper (aka. Caspie, Little Chinnie, etc.)- Sorry the pictures aren't as good, I've only had him for a week so I've not had the chance to take many good shots yet!

Hope you enjoyed meeting the Chinnies! :D

I just checked it 5 minutes ago, it seems to have healed a lot! I took a picture although there isn't a lot to see, the red/black dot at the bottom of the foot is where the wound was. I can't believe how fast it has healed!

I have assumed that maybe he has caught one of his callouses on his foot when jumping around and tore a bit off, however I can't be 100% certain. I have checked the joints and there is no visible swelling.
Yes, he was chewing the wound. Bad chin!
It was about the size of a little finger nail.

He has a wire floored cage with cat litter in a tray underneath however he has so many perches and shelves that he never goes on the bottom of the cage, at least not that I've seen. It is changed once every 5 days usually, this is only because it gets full of hay as he scatters it everywhere! He has two huge wooden platforms, and has playtime everyday on a soft carpet.
He gets a dust bath every other day and has access to it during playtime, he usually spends around 15 minutes in total. He uses the only one that Pets At Home sell, it's made by B and D and is just called Chinchilla dusting powder. No I live in the UK so it's very wet here usually haha!
Oh he has a luxury diet, Pets at Home Chinchilla pellets and timothy hay and then treats of either rosehips or Xtra Vital Chinchilla Muesli, I prefer to use this as treats instead of a food as with muesli they just tend to eat the bits that they like and therefore don't get a balanced diet.
He does get dry ears, hence why I limit his dust baths.

Ps. Here is Henry when I was trying to take a picture of his foot, he was more than a little confused haha!

Pps. If you are wondering why there is newpaper on the other cage behind him it's because I recently got an 18 week old Chin and he is very skittish so he benefits from the extra shelter. It's not that my house is a mess or that I just leave things lying around in their room for them to chew haha!

Health / Chinchilla has an injured back foot, help??
« on: July 10, 2012, 04:13:11 PM »
So today I noticed that Henry was nibbling and fussing with his back foot, I picked him up and when I looked I saw that he has a smallish wound, it appears to be where some of the skin has been pulled off. It is red, fresh but it doesn't appear to be inflamed. He is perfectly normal within himself, wanting to play, climb and stuff his face as usual so I don't think it's bumblefoot. He has always had dry feet, is there anything I can do to help this?
Also is there anything I can do as regards to the cut? Currently I have just left it as I didn't want to make anything worse! It isn't bleeding, it is just a neat, red scrape wound.

Thanks!

General Chat / Re: My new Chin won't let me anywhere near him, help?

Ah ok, thanks everyone for all the great advice! I was just at a loss because my other Chinchilla, Henry, was so easy to tame as he is INCREDIBLY food orientated haha!
Thanks everyone, it means a lot! :D

Well I bought him off a relatively inexperienced Chin owner who had a male and a female and guess what, they had babies. Sadly only Casper survived however he is very skittish. That sounds like a good idea, I had been leaving his cage door open and allowing him to venture around the room (supervised of course) so would you advise against this for now?
Yes I am pretty sure that he is a he, when I went to view him I sexed him myself. Yes he has a little nestbox with some hay in which he can sit in if he pleases, however he doesn't seem to use it at all however previously at his breeders house he was just in a cage with platforms, no housing so maybe he isn't used to it?
Thanks for your help!

« on: July 01, 2012, 04:22:15 PM »
So I have bought a new 18 week old Chin who hasn't been handled much at all. I am keeping him seperate from my other Chin however they are both in the same room and seem to enjoy chattering to each other. His arrival has certainly cheered Henry up a lot!

Anyway, Casper (the new pink white Chin) just doesn't want to know, he won't take any treats from me either through the bars or in the cage and is really skittish. He has had three days to settle in, Henry was willing to take treats very quickly however Casper just freaks, he won't eat any treats that you leave for him until I have left the room. I have been just sitting with him a lot recently so that he can get used to my presence but so far I feel like I've hit a brick wall. I mean, how can I tame him if he won't even accept any treats that are just left for him? Let alone trying to give him one through the bars/via my fingers in his cage.

What can I do? I don't know how else to approach this, any ideas greatly appreciated!

General Chat / Re: Advice urgently needed on lone Chinchilla!
« on: June 27, 2012, 09:52:33 AM »
Ahh so you think that he will be happy enough alone then?
I read somewhere that Chin owners should spend at least 2/3 hours a day interacting with their lone Chin which I just can't do, I juggle University, work, horses, dogs and chickens, all of which are cared for by me! So I really can't afford that time everyday, so what would you recommend me do with him? Just leave him how he is? I spend around 30 mins with him a day, longer if he wants to carry on playing but usually he hops back into his cage after a bit.

General Chat / Advice urgently needed on lone Chinchilla!
« on: June 27, 2012, 04:08:28 AM »
Hello all!
So I own a lovely 2 year old male Chinchilla called Henry, I adopted him a year ago from Pets at Home where he was already on his own. Anyway he seems reasonably happy, eating normally (stuffing his face actually), drinking etc. And he has an abundance of toys and chews to keep him entertained, as well as me letting him out every evening so that he can have the free run of the entire room (under supervision of course!)
However I notice that he just sits around a lot, not doing much. Also he very rarely makes any noise, he never chirps or barks etc. Is this normal?
Would you guys introduce another, younger, male Chinchilla? I know all about the introduction process and that they may not get on etc. and I have two very large cages. I mean, how much would he benefit from having a next door neighbor who he can see and communicate with?
So, what would you advise. Get another Chinchilla and try to introduce them? Or get one and keep them as neighbors? Or leave him be as he seems happy enough?

Ps. I work part time and attend university as does my partner so he does spend quite a lot of the day on his own!
