Health / Eye is stuck shut!!
« on: May 23, 2013, 09:07:42 PM »
When I was feeding my chinchillas a few minutes ago I noticed one of my chinchillas eyes is stuck shut. I tried to gently open it and see what was going on. It's only opened a tiny bit but it looks almost like a thick skin of mucas is holding it together. Also it feels a little crusty. She's acting fine and it wasn't like that this morning!! Is this a possible reacting to something like if a cat were to scratch the eye? Thanks :)

Health / Chinchillas fur knotted?
« on: January 10, 2013, 09:41:34 PM »
Hello,
If anyone could give me some advice it would be greatly appreciated. Near my chinchillas tail the fur feels knotted. Its only on the tips on the fur. It doesn't feel sticky but has the texture of if something sticky was on the fur and dried. Could this be from my male chinchilla mating and possible semen getting on her fur? Also she is pregnant so maybe she cant take her dust baths good enough at the moment? i know she tries to role around in the dust bath. Is there anything i could do? Thanks again

Health / babies trying to mate?
« on: December 15, 2012, 08:21:11 PM »
My chinchilla had kits in June, i currently have the two boy kits together in the same cage and the girl in another, however they all run around together. When i was putting the chinchillas away today i noticed one of the boys trying to mate with another boy, he appeared to have sperm right under his tail and he wasnt trying to get away or anything. Im almost positive he didnt try to mate with the female so the few questions i have are
-How young can a chinchilla get pregnant? ( the girl is pretty small so im not even sure if its possible)
-Why wasnt the other male trying to get away and can this be harmful?
I would separate them if possible but i only have 3 cages.. if anyone can recommend a way to split them up with 3 cages it would be very much appreciated.  I have 3 kits as i said before, the two males are together in one cage, the female has her own cage and the parents are together in their own cage. Thanks

Thats for the replies. Its not actually liquid just mushy, it doesnt come out hard.
Her diet consists of a daily amount of Fiesta Mix chinchilla food and timothy hay. I have started to give her little wood chew blocks for chinchillas a few weeks ago. Also i give her one treat a day (dandelion drops)

Health / If anyone has advice or knows of this please help.
« on: September 13, 2012, 02:00:46 PM »
Ive had two chinchillas for about 2 years now. my female chinchilla had kits about 4 months ago. The chins are allowed to run around my room everyday for play time. When i first got the female chinchilla i was told it was okay to catch the chinchilla by the base of the tail. (not jerking her or to pick her up or anything) this didnt seem to be an issue ever. Anyway, i caught one of the kits like that as well for it takes me a long time to catch them. The chinchilla dropped a little piece of his tail off. The actual tale is still there but its like he slid his skin and fur off a part of his tail. It has scabbed over and ive been putting some ointment on it. (clear anti infection stuff)(ive stopped catching them by the tail)  Hes acting normal and eating and all that. I noticed today that his stool is not black/brown. its more of a dark green and not the same shape his stool used to be. I did read that the tail thing was a defense mechanism. so i was just wondering if any of you ever delt with this. thanks in advanced  :)
