Health / Bumps on ears/watery eyes
« on: January 06, 2008, 08:43:17 PM »
As I said already in a post in this forum, about a week ago, my 3 year old chinchilla passed away.  He had no apparent symptoms until the last 24 hours before his death.

Now though, I'm concerned about my sister's chinchilla, Mico, as well.

He's about 8 months old and my sister got him only a month ago.  We did let Mico and Gizmo play together twice (and they had seperate cages in seperate rooms).  What we've noticed now is that Mico's eyes are suddenly watery.  (They are not running though.)  Also, Mico's ears have a few wart like bumps on them.  But, he's very active, has nice teeth and no hair rings.

I'm just wondering if the "warts" and the watery eyes are something to worry about... And also, Gizmo had runny eyes, but never had "warts" on his ears.

She already set up an appointment with the vet for next thursday, but if you guys think we should make it an urgent appointment, let me know!

Thanks everyone for the quick answers.

Gizmo died a few hours after I posted that message.  I'll never know what happened. Everyone in my family is stunned.  We all loved him way too much.

Also, I'm sorry I haven't posted any update since, but I couldn't bring myself to come on here or do anything that reminded me of him dying.  Alot of people keep telling me he was only an animal, but, seriously, my whole world crashed.  Anyway, I won't bore you with my whining... I'm just letting you know what happened.

Thank you again.  I remember how friendly this board was when I first got Gizmo and it's reassuring to see people on here are still as caring and understanding.

Health / URGENT: Dying Chinchilla

I've been up all night.  I might not be eloquent.

Last night, around 11 pm, I found my 3 year old male chinchilla lying listless in his cage.  It's 10 am now and he's still in the same condition.

SYMPTOMS

- lethargic
- cold body (in particular: ears, nose, paws)
- slightly quicker breathing
- watery eyes
- not eating or drinking

HEALTH (before yesterday night)

His droppings are a pale brown and hard and normal sized.
He's made at least 30 droppings in the last 12 hours.
No changes in the way he ate and drank.
No teeth problems.
No hair rings.
No injuries.
No noted medical conditions.

SELF-DIAGNOSIS: Stress-related shock?

I looked it up on the internet and stress-related shock seemed the best diagnosis.  (Though what the shock was, I have no idea.)I'm still following the instructions, keeping him warm and getting 2 mL of pedialyte in him every 2 hours.  In the last hour, he's just stopped swallowing the pedialyte.

VET?

If he survives the day, I am seeing a vet tomorrow. (No vets today, it's a Sunday.)

HELP PLEASE...

I love my Gizmo so so much, I don't understand how it all happened.  He was always perfectly healthy, up to yesterday night that is. I don't want this to be happening.  I don't want to watch my soul mate die, not this young, not like this!!!!!
