Health / !HELP! Female Chinchilla Vaginal Discharge
« on: April 18, 2017, 05:35:45 PM »
I come home today to my 3 chinchillas and all seemed well until later on the mother of the other 2 was eating her feces which I know isn't abnormal until I saw a couple pellets stuck to her nose and that freaked me out as it was so I tried to pick her up and she wasn't having it and she ran to the bottom corner of the cage and for the first time in the nearly 2 years I have owned her she sprayed me which caused me to back off and leave her alone. That was until I looked where she standing before I tried to grab her and there was a wet kinda white spot on the shelf which then set me off into protect mode and I needed to see what was going on so I picked her up to much of her discord and cleaned off her nose and then started to inspect her and I found that she had something white sticking out from her vaginal area from which point I placed her back down and from then she is very inactive still hasn't gotten off the cage floor or for that matter really moved. I am super freaked out and don't know what to do. Should I separate her from the other 2. I need your help if you need pictures of it I can get some. I'm really worried about her and there isn't a vet that I know of around me that can handle her this late, the closest one it nearly an hour and a half away. Also the goop that was on her nose was kinda sticky almost like halfway dried Elmer's glue. Please give me any help you can.

Health / I think my chinchilla has brain damage. Help
« on: July 21, 2014, 03:39:43 PM »
This is no way a joke or anything this is happening to my chinchilla. Let me give u the story, 2 night ago I though it might be time for my chinchillas first play time with me because all the wanted to do was get out of the cage and the would come to hand so I thought it might be time, it was probably around 9 pm and they were all up and moving around so i took the carrying case and put the 2 daughters in it so I could take them to the bathroom for play time but the mom didn't want to go in and when I tried to pick her up to put her in she bit me so I let her be. I took the other 2 to the bathroom and they played around in there for maybe an hour and they had been doing so good I thought they need a treat and I wanted to get something to drink so I got up left the room got a drink and then her comes the bad part when I went into my room to get the treat ( I also keep the cage they are in, in the room) I found the mom chin in the bottom of the cage laying on her side I thought she might be sleeping but I still investigated and opened the cage and she didn't move so that is when I got scared so I petted her she still didn't move so I picked her up and she barked at me but didn't move and was lethargic so I freaked out and put her on my bed and checked on the chins in the bathroom and put them in there carrying case and put them in my room and looked at the mom I immediately called the emergency vet near me and they told me that the exotic vet couldn't be in till morning and to just look after her till then. I was so angry but I kept a level head and tended to the mom, I got a towel and put her on my lap then about 30 minutes to an hour she started to seize not bad but still did. I thought in my head there is nothing I can do if god is going to take her let it be, so I put her in her cage on the bottom and let thing take its course. I stayed up all night looking after her to see if anything had changed. Her seizures got closer and closer together and got more violent. That morning they got less violent and more spaced til they were gone she hasn't had one since but she has been acting weird, she is really wobbly when she walks and she can't jump she can barely get on the wheel and when she gets on the wheel she usually sleeps. She also is having trouble eating and drinking when she goes to the bottle she is like 1/4 inch away and trying to drink or is up on the rod thing. I have been having to supplement feed her to get her some water and food. She has been a work load but do u think this is brain damage or just her way a recovering from the seizures. Do u think I should go to the vet or not, I don't think he can do anything. Also the other chins are doing fine and do u think I am over reacting and not giving her enough time to recover. Any help and support u can give would be amazing

Health / Re: My new chinchilla with marts in her fur. HELP!
« on: July 15, 2014, 04:01:48 PM »
They are on her hind legs kinda on her side/ back side. Some are big some are small mostly all of them go to the skin. She doesn't spend much time at the water bottle but still drinks also she doesn't drool or anything. The previous owner told me she gave them water bathes when they got pee on there fur and that made me so mad, could that be where the matts came from. Also there is matting on her belly

Health / My new chinchilla with marts in her fur. HELP!
« on: July 14, 2014, 11:16:44 PM »
I people if u have read my older post u know I have 3 new chins and the daughters are very lovey and I am bonding with them well. The mother is another story, when I was going to go get them the woman said the mom was really antisocial. Now I think I know why, she has marts on her back legs/side. I noticed this when I rubbed her and I looked it up and it said that sometimes fur mats are annoying and stuff and they can be bad for skin health and to get them out. Now here is the problem, 1. I can't pick her up to get them out, 2. I don't know how to get them out, 3. When I try to pick her up she bites me and once I finally get her in my arms she freaks and scratches be to death. So I need to know how to get fur mats out of my new chinchilla

General Chat / Possible mushy poops. Help!?
« on: July 12, 2014, 09:39:00 PM »
I am a worry wart when it comes to my new chinchillas and if anything happens to them I get kinda worrie. Now when I first got them they popped everywhere on the shelves everywhere, so maybe once or twice a day I sweep of the shelves. I would step on there poops and it would feel like stepping on a airsoft bb or marble but when I was walking in my room stepped on there poops today they where kinda squishy not like spread all over the place squishy just if u step or even pick up and squeeze they squish down a bit and when I went to sweep out the shelf they were the same. I have been trying to change there food and have been doing it right 25% new food and 75% old food for the first week or 2 and I haven't even went that far yet, so I changed there food back to all old and just so u know when I wake up all the food is gone  so I know they are not just eating the new stuff. Also they like to chew on the bars so every time I see them chewing on the bars I take a stick for the cage and give it to them and usually stop and eat the bark off the sticks. They have eat in a lot of the sticks do h think that could do it? Also I changed there hay to a higher quality but that was on Monday so I don't think that is the issue. Any insight u can give me would be thanked.

Also what kind of sickness can chins get from u?

General Chat / Will my chinchillas forgive me
« on: July 10, 2014, 06:50:28 PM »
Well let me start off and say since I have adopt them they have been everything I have ever expected.  Now the story, I let them alone for a day or 2 and did what I normally do during the day, and they set a very fast pace. I could literally run by there cage and and move as fast as I can and they weren't scared, so I thought it might be time it in envolve my hands, so I opened the cage doors on the bottom level and sat down and put my hands in the cage with a treat in my palm. They started off really scared then one worked up the nerve to come and see what I was all about.  She started to go to my hand and run away then she nibbled my finger to test what I was then took the treat then the other 2 came down and did the same. After they did that I thought that was enough for the day.  A little later I felt like cleaning out there cage and I did, pulled out all the bedding and poops.  Now this is where it get interesting when I was putting the bedding in I was using one hand to put the bedding in the cage and another to spread it around , well I got a text and I need to answer it so while I was reading it I left one hand in the cage and the chinchillas felt like they should see what's going on and one of the daughters came to my hand and smelt and nibbled and I let her do it, I really didn't mind, so she did what she wanted to do and left. Now the mother came down and did the same except when she got to the index finger she nibbled then bit me hard I am not going to lie it hurt, so I did what someone told me when they bit and u couldn't get then to release, do a quick puff of air in there face. Well all three were around when I did it and they all freaked and ran up to there safe spot, while I was tending to my would which was bleeding a lot, I closed the doors and wash it and but a band aid on it then a glove till I could finish my job and I did then I felt like sleeping so I went to sleep in my bed woke up and started on my schedule (refill the water bottle, clean out the old hay and put more in, and putting pellets in there bowl) but I noticed something when I went to there cage (they were up since it was at 4:30 am, had to get ready for work that day) they all ran and hid from me when I walked really slow to the cage, which was odd because they didn't do that before.

I thought back that night when she bit me and thought maybe they got a little scared of me so I let them alone for a day and the daughter got a little better but the mom is still angry at me. Just so u know I blew in her face for a last resort, I shook my finger thing to get her off and she just stayed latched on.

Do u think she will ever forgive me or will I have to start from the beginning and be even more slow.

Also since I have 3 chins how do I tell if the mom is eating because I haven't seen her eating after the incident but she could be doing it when I am sleeping.

Any help u can give me would be a thanks.

General Chat / How To Start Bonding
« on: July 07, 2014, 02:54:37 PM »
Hello people out there i just got my 3 new chinchillas and they are amazing. One is the mother and and the other 2 are the daughters. Now we went to get the today and the ride was good I put them in the cage all was fine I gave them a dust bath and the mom didn't want to get out of it but I got her out. They Finally learned they could jump up the shelves and i let them be they slept then once they got a little more moving around I tried to interact with them just a little bit and I got one to take the treat out of my hand and I thought, "that's good" then I go to the other and have a treat in my hand she went for my fingers nipped just a bit (testing me) and I went with it then she got to the thumb and then nipped, then she bit me not hard enough to draw blood but it hurt so I blew in her face to get her to stop and I gave that  treat to the mother and she ate it, then I over stepped my boundaries when I rubbed her and she gave me a warning nip so I left her in peace.

I need to know how do I bond with them the right way, step by step

Also is it normal for the biting even when my hand was completely still.

I just need some help cause this is my first time ever have a chinchilla, let alone 3 of them. Any help and advice u can give me would be greatly appreciated, also if u want me to post pictures of them I will.

General Chat / Re: Well, that was a waste of money.

Sounds like the chins I am about to adopt. I went over to the woman's house to see if they were in good care and I brought some treats. That was a mistake I gave this a pumice rock and within 2 hours it was just dust and stuff and there is 3 of them and man can that destroy stuff and fast. I will be adopting them after the 4th of July and its a mom and her daughters. I also gave them a vine spider filled with rose hips, and hay and it was gone by the next day the lady told me. I was kind astonished because it was like 7 inches wide not even including the legs. But that's a chin, destroy anything that taste good, looks like it matters and anything that the human likes  rofl  and the funniest thing I have saw them do is use me for a launch pad to get over the gate she uses to hold them in there cage room for play time and also her chins, well soon to be my chins think its funny to poo in the food bowl 2.

Hey all u out there let me give u the story about this. I was browsing craiglist in my area and then I found these girls on there (pics below). Ok there is three of them being sold for 150$ together. I never thought cages and accessories would cost this much cage 210.83$ accessories: 250 dollars. The cage had shipping included and it is a ferret nation model 182. If one of u could find a sale somewhere that has the model 82 cheaper. with all the accessories that doesn't include shipping and the chins and the cage the total comes to 610$ and 83 cent that doesn't even include the bottle or the food or hay those are going to be some spoiled chinchillas ::nod::

General Chat / How do i keep food fresh
« on: June 24, 2014, 11:01:51 AM »
Hi it is easier and cheaper to buy chinchilla food in 50lb bags and I want to know if there of are ways to keep the food fresh.  I though about freezing to food in air tight bags, would that keep it fresh

General Chat / Treat questions
« on: June 01, 2014, 08:30:36 PM »
Hi I was browsing Youtube for treat ideas for my upcoming chins and I found one that I am not sure about so I am coming to you the link for the video will be below but let me give u the story this laby owns I think 2 hamster now but I don't know when that video was made but anyway she made a treat the had Flour, Oat, Water and treats of your choice ( she used dried blueberries) the recipe is 1/2 cup of water, 1 cup of plain flour, 1 cup of Porridge oats, 1/2 cup of treats. In the video she iced them with a hamster safe stuff but I will leave that off if the treat itself is ok for a chin. All I need to know is if the treat is small portions is safe for chinchillas and also some safe treats for chinchillas like dehydrated goji berries stuff like that.

Also she makes toys and one she made was a hanging walnut shell toy. It was made by splitting a walnut and getting out the nut and using the shell by putting a hole in the top and feeding string through and hanging it and if u wanted u could put treats in the shell for a little surprise. I can't really be clear on something and some of it doesn't make since because it is hard to explain if u have questions watch the video below and please watch both the videos completely through and most likely it will answer you questions. Also I need to know if walnut shell is safe for chinchilla consumption. and thanks for your answers.
