Breeding 101 / Re: Week old kit, is Mom okay?
« on: March 30, 2018, 05:42:36 PM »
Mom chin is doing a lot better but unfortunately the baby passed away last night. Mom wasn't producing as much milk as she should have been so the vet had me start supplementing kitten formula out of nursing bottle. A few hours after the first feeding I noticed the baby was barely moving so I contacted a 24 hour vet (45mins from where I live) and the baby died on the way there. The 24 hour vets were pretty sure the baby aspirated and got fluid in his lungs from the bottle. It was sad and long night. The mom's health is progressing forward though, and I plan to get her spayed. I would love to breed her again (She's a beautiful black velvet) But I can't go through this again if there's a possibility she has another tough pregnancy and birth.

-btw: I don't have the breeders contact info anymore and the business is shut down.

I took her to the vet because I was concerned. She’s very thin but weighs more because she has a bunch of excess fluid in her body. She has hemtomas everywhere. The vet put her on vitamin supplents twice a day (calcium and vitamin k) and I’m feeding her critical care 4 times a day. Baby is still healthy and active, the mom is producing milk. Her energy levels seem a bit higher now, and she goes for a follow up on Thursday.

She seems to be healthy, just tired. I just picked her up and noticed blood on my hand. I’m not sure if it’s from her genitals or anus, what could this mean?

My chinchilla gave birth a week ago, she has bred before with the previous owner. She weighs 1lb 10 ounces right now, How Long will it take her to lose her baby weight? I can also feel her spine when I pet her back, is this normal because she’s carrying excess weight in her belly or should I be concerned? She’s acting fine, eating well, nursing. The baby weighs 51 grams now, it was 45 grams the day after it was born.

Q & A / Re: Chinchilla has small poop
« on: December 25, 2016, 04:19:43 PM »
I'm not sure you should be giving your chin nuts. This is a massive no no here in the U.K. When you say mixed greens, are you referring to veg, or chin safe forage?
I can cut out the nuts if I need too, it was usually only half a cashew or half a peanut once a week that I would give it to him anyways. And by mixed greens he is usually fed collard greens, once in a while I'll give him low amounts of spinach or kale. He's been eating this type of stuff for the 6 years I've had him, he's about 7 right now.

Q & A / Chinchilla has small poop
« on: December 25, 2016, 02:16:05 PM »
I recently moved back home from Oregon to California for winter break, I brought my chin home with me and since I have gotten him here his poop seem to be smaller. He's eating the same as he was a few months ago (Oxbow pellets, mixed greens, fresh water, and only 1 treat a day (raisin, dandelion drop, nuts). I haven't been able to get him to eat hay in almost a year but he's been to the vet and been healthy. His poop has been small for 2 weeks, is he not getting enough nutrients or is there a bigger issue?

Q & A / Hemp Bedding
« on: December 05, 2016, 05:03:02 PM »
I have a friend who helped manage a hemp grow op. in Oregon this year. He made some hemp bedding for small animals and wants to give me some to try out with my chinchilla. It's completely natural and no chemicals were added, but is it safe for a chinchilla to use hemp bedding?

Q & A / Re: Chin won't chew anymore

Thank you for all the info and suggestions to help my chin. I made him a vet appointment for this Thursday so hopefully everything will work out okay. He is still eating pellets but not the hay or toys as of right now.

Thank you for the food suggestions, I have some oxbow pellets on hand from a new chin I got 2 weeks ago. I'll try those.

As for my older one, I put hay in his cage and he showed interest but spread it around everywhere instead of really eating it. When I hold him or if he puts his mouth close to my skin, I do feel some moist air/wetness. Would this be drool from his teeth bothering him?

If chins are getting too many treats or mixed foods, could that fill them up and make them not want to chew or eat hay? Then that leading into teeth problems. Mine was very healthy for the 7 years I've had him, but he's been moved around a lot the past 6-8 months, with me going to college and coming home (I bring him with me). During school I wasn't home everyday with him either. I have been feeding him way more treats than I used to because I feel bad and want him to feel happier and not get stressed or as lonely and treats seem to do the trick.

I have many different foods available to me and I also don't mind buying online if I have too. If you could recommend a few, I would appreciate it. I am going to at least try and take my chinchilla into a vet sometime this week, to at least get a veterinary opinion. Do you know what an average cost is for chinchilla dental examinations?

Unfortunately, I probably can't afford to take him to the vet to get numerous tests done. If I knew a specific thing wrong with him I could take him in, but all those tests and x-rays add up. I will definitely switch his diet to just timothy hay and alfalfa pellets though, is there a certain brand that's better than others?

Q & A / Chin won't chew anymore
« on: August 12, 2016, 09:27:40 PM »
I've had my standard grey male chinchilla for about 7 years now, he's 8, and recently he has stopped chewing on his toys. I buy him new ones every once in a while and he'll chew on it for a few minutes and then not touch it again. I'm afraid his teeth are going to get overgrown if he doesn't chew on anything. He has also stopped eating his hay. I bought "kaytee Timothy Hay" which he used to love, this one does have mangoes mixed in though. Could the mangoes be why he stopped eating his hay? He's still eating his pellets and treats when he gets them.

Q & A / Re: Will a baby chinchilla get along with an adult
« on: March 22, 2015, 07:11:10 PM »
Are you trying to breed?
I would like to breed in the future. But it's not what I'm trying to do, I mainly just want another chin because I love them so much, and it would help mine not get lonely while I'm at college during the day.

Q & A / Will a baby chinchilla get along with an adult
« on: March 22, 2015, 12:39:28 PM »
I have an adult male chinchilla, he is about 8 years old. I've been thinking about getting a new chinchilla recently, preferably a girl. I was looking into getting a baby girl chinchilla but will a baby be compatible with an adult male or would it be better off to get a chinchilla around the same age as mine? Mine has been around 2 other chinchillas in his lifetime (they were my friend's chinchillas, both girls) One of them he got along great with, they would cuddle and clean each other but the other one he fought with. So if I get another chin should I go with a baby or an adult, and would a girl or boy be better?

Q & A / new chinchilla very agressive
« on: September 29, 2014, 10:31:33 AM »
My friend just bought a surrendered chinchilla about a week ago from Petco. She's female, not sure about the age, past owners, or how long she was at the store. But she is mean. She lets you hand feed her treats, and once in a while you can pet her, other times she tries to bite or makes a growling sound. She is almost impossible to pick up and move her to clean her cage without gloves on because she'll bite. My friend has another chinchilla (also female). I have one as well (male) the two that we have love attention and love to be held and cuddled and weren't very aggressive when we got them. Any ideas on how to make this one warm up to people or even the other chinchillas? (they all have separate cages, and the male and female we already had get along together great). I have the new one at my place right now because I am home often and can give her more attention or whatever she needs.
