Thanks, he has made it easy. I have had him myself for 19 years and when I got him the person he came from told me he was between 2 and 3 years old so his age is a bit of a guess but at the bare minimum 20.

Once he is out of the cage I can get the eye drop in pretty quickly and the metacam is no prob, he takes it from the dropper willingly.  It is getting him from the cage, it is a large cage, I have been first taking the ramp out so he cant get up to the second or third level to help make it easier, but now as soon as he hears the cage door open he starts freaking out.  I know it is necessary but makes me sad because he has always happily come to the door to be picked up for a cuddle.

It was a large cage with a wire mesh bottom with a tray underneath that you would fill with shavings and slide in/out to clean, he was right in the middle.  I wasn't home when it happened so I really don't know, but Mickey was a 'bouncer' he loved to leap and ping off the walls so my only guess was some fluke where he managed to slip or land just right so that his foot was on some weird angle to get through the mesh and then he panicked.  There was a full tray of shavings underneath at the time.  He had two surgeries. He came through like a champ and lived another decade bouncing as much as ever but on only 3 legs.  It was his back right leg.  Solid bottom cages and shelves for me ever since!!!

I am no expert on anything, I have had 2 chins in my life.  My current one is 20 years old.  But my first chin, Mickey, was a tripod, he only had 3 legs because one was lost due to an accident with a mesh floor.  When I wasn't home he somehow managed to get his foot in it and in his fight to free himself caused quite a bit of damage.  He adapted well to having only 3 legs and lived a full live but it was traumatic for all of us :(  Sorry not trying to be doomy just sharing in case it can spare anyone else having to go through that!

Hi, I found your site while looking for some advice.  I have a 20/21 year old chinchilla named Oscar.  He is an amazing little guy who has always been in fantastic health.  He is mostly blind this last year and has slowed down considerably.  Currently he managed to get a scratch on his eye and it is infected.  I took him to the vet and he was given metacam for pain and an antibiotic eye drop.

Here is my current problem, day 1, 2 and 3 went well, but he has decided he is done cooperating and does everything in his power to not be picked up and held for his drops, including barking and biting.

Any tips to make this easier?
