Breeding 101 / Re: Preparing for kits
« on: March 28, 2015, 01:00:22 PM »
Thank you for the information! The bar spacing on my cage is 3/4-1"
As for age, the guy i got them from told me that they are around 3 yrs of age.  She  is a black velvet, if she was bred before  i moved her then the father is a normal grey.

No they are not pedigree, i adopted them from a guy thinking they were both males but after a couple weeks of introduction with my current male I decided to double check everyones gender.  The pair was a male/female pair instead of male/male. I am not sure how far along she is or if she is for sure pregnant. Her behavior has changed so I would rather be safe than sorry.

Breeding 101 / Preparing for kits
« on: March 28, 2015, 08:20:51 AM »
Hello..
I have a female who seems to be showing signs of pregnancy and I want to start getting prepared just to be safe. I have been reading around on whether or not to remove the male directly after birth. Correct me if I am wrong but I am seeing that he should be removed sometime before the 72hr mark as that is when the female will go into heat, and he will help the female with the kits. But my question is.. Will a male chinchilla eat/kill babies that are not his own? The female is possibly pregnant with kits from her previous mate and I do not want something going wrong that can be prevented.

Breeding 101 / New discovery..
« on: February 02, 2015, 09:55:27 PM »
I picked up 2 3 year old chinchillas (black velvet & standard grey) on New years so my current male (mosaic) can have some companions. Well after many trials and failures to get them all acquainted, i decided to dig a little deeper, in the process i figured out my new black velvet is a female.. Not another male..

Can anybody give me some things to look out for.. Tips.. Any other helpful information.
Like "courtship" behavior... How to tell when she is in heat.. Can the male stay with her and the future kits.. Things to look out for..
Im currently doing more research on everything as well.

General Chat / New member with some new additions
« on: January 02, 2015, 05:45:16 PM »
Hello everybody, my names Dylan and im a new member around here just looking to learn a thing or two and meet some other chinchilla lovers! ;)

I currently own 3 male chinchillas, all being rescues. 1 of which i have had for a year. He is a large mosaic male named Chilly, not sure of his age though. He was a rescue from a meth house and has been with me since last January.
My other 2 lovelies are new additions. I picked them up Wednesday night for free from a guy off craigslist who could no longer care for them. They are around 3 years old but a good bit smaller than Chilly. They are a normal grey and either an ebony or black velvet... Not sure of the differences between the two. Their names are Ollie & Dex.
The 3 are currently in 2 separate cages until they are used to each other, then they will be in a double ferret nation cage.

Now just a short little bit on my other pets. I currently own 2 snakes (1.1 pair of ball pythons), and rats along with my chinchillas. I used to breed angelfish for several years but i recently shut that down.

I can't wait to learn a little about you guys and learn from what you know about these amazing creatures!
Happy new years!!
Dylan
