Thank  you for your reply :)

Yes I'm at a loss to when it comes to her dislike of hay...  ::shrug::

It's always and forever been this way .. And we've had her for 8 years!  I do think that it could be a
Development Behavioral issues as where she came from was a horrible situation .. We basically rescued her from the god awful pet shop and then reported them to the proper authorities ... She as far as we know was 2 years + and had never been exposed to hay so we assume. This is why no matter how hard we tried she never took to it.. I would be so overjoyed if she did but being that she's over 10 now I think your right .. It is what it is....

Thankfully there is no matting of the chin hair so that should make regrowth a lot easier.. But I will be on constant watch for any change in the staining that's there now. I got such a bad fright with her before.. One side effect to her being more active and running about is that it's impossible to catch her any more... She has her little hiding places that he loves and I'm happy she's comfortable again .. So now we just hope that from here on out she improves .. She's a tough little nut and I think she has many more years left in her yet!

General Chat / Messi Update :)
« on: March 05, 2015, 06:32:06 PM »
Well it's been a long recovery but Messi has been leavin her cage for the last two weeks now and setting up camp in her favourite hideaway over her cage.. She's a lot more active and using we dust bath again..

She still isn't eating hay :( I had hoped that she would she her teeth had been filled down but it just never happened .. I did buy new dandelion & marigold hay and I mix up some of the "petal" food with it in the hope that she might "accidentally" eat some hay while rooting for the petals but it's hard to tell if she does..

As I mentioned I have been keeping a large supply of petal food... Which contains , dandelion , rose petals, lavender, corn flowers, hibiscus, marrow flowers , just about every flower a chinchilla is allowed to eat.. She does still get a treat of only one raisin a day but I think I'm still only doing this out of paranoia as I'm trying to reassure myself she's still eating..

My only concern now is her chin is still discoloured. As she's a Wilson Chin it's very obvious and I'm worried it's fresh drool and not just the staining left behind from the initial drool.. Her chin is never wet to the touch and the stainin hasn't increased in size at all I'm at a loss as to how to clean it .. She likes me petting her but as soon as she realised I'm trying to clean up her chin she gets very narky with me..

How long does this discolouration stay  concidering she a Snow White girl??! It's obvious she can't clean her chin herself will it just disappear as the fur sheds naturally over a long period of time?

Thanks I'll try the warmer temps and hope for the best.. We are realistic about it we know her age doesn't give her the best chances and it had taken her over 12 hours to come around from the GA.. Which is an incredibly long time..

General Chat / Messi won't leave her cage...???
« on: February 02, 2015, 06:45:22 PM »
So Messi seems to be doing a lot better :) she is eatin now and I have made sure to get her very healthy treats like cornflower & summer field dried flowers ... Which she loves! She gets one raisin or piece of dried banana every second day now..

I'm buying some new hay for her in an attempt to get her to eat it regularly.. I think she is eating a little hay now cause I'm tricking her and mixing the flower petals in wih it and this new hay has dandelion & camomile mixed in so fingers crossed.. She has never liked hay to begin with not ever no matter what I tried or what brands.. But I think I can trick her  ::)

Anyway my only worry now is that she doesn't seem to be as active... She used to come out of her cage on a regular basis and she used to jump on all her perches ... He also had a favorite hiding place on a chair she used to get to by climbing up the outside of her cage.. But she's not doing any of that now. She has good energy and jumps from the floor of her cage to the first level (her bed and cooling stone) but that's it at the moment .. Could it be that he is suffering from side effects due to her very slow recovery from the GA 3 weeks ago ? Could there be permanent damage ... It has been colder than usual here would a drop in temp slow down her activity? I have been trying to keep her room temp at a constant 19 degree Celsius for the last day just incase she's too cold..

If she still isn't back to normal activity level in a few weeks will it be safe to say she has been permanently damaged :(

She seem pretty happy at the moment .. Greeting me at cage door ..which we leave open all the time now so she has full run of her room 24/7. ...

Thanks for your reply :)

Unfortunately we didn't know about the gradual introductions when we adopted the black chin .. We always knew Messi to take to the kittens immoderately so never thought there would have been a problem.. I think she just likes her own company and the distraction of the cats nowadays.. Someday a she wants us to hold we and other she'll bark at us to leave her in peace. He has a large multi level cage but we leave it open 24/7 for her she has a whole room to herself to run aroun in whenever she pleases..

We do hope we have a few more years yet with her but after her scare with the General anesthic (it took her 12 hours to come around from the GA !) last Friday we will never put her through that again. So we pray she'll stay healthy for a long time yet. She sea to be improving and we stopped the syringe feeds a few days ago and she is passing stool samples and her food bowl has been disturbed several times a day over the last 2 days now so I think she's on the mend. I'm just cautious I don't want to be over optomistic just yet.

General Chat / New here.. Hello from Ireland :)
« on: January 19, 2015, 05:50:05 PM »
Just want to properly introduce myself :)

I posted early as I'm having a few issues with my Chin Chin Messi ... I think she may be improving :) unfortunately where I live in Ireland there aren't many vets used to seeing Chinchillas .. The closest vet that has knowlege on them is over an hour away and poor Messi just wouldn't be fit for that kind of trip. The vet I do have is a very caring and kind one and he try's his very best...

So Messi is 10 years plus ... We aren't exactly sure of her age because when we rescued her she was full matured and unbeknown to use pregnant at the time too.  Unfortunately she lost her pups but we have had her 8 years now and she loves spending time with the cats :)

Messi is a Wilson Chinchilla and in all my years I've never seen another one but I'm sure there are a few in Ireland .. Grey / violet chinchillas are all I've ever seen but I did once fun a black chinchilla and we though Messi would live the company.. Big mistake she almost killed the poor thing :( he was ok but we had to return him the the breeder straight away..

I rescue disabled cats so Messi always has company although we can't leave her out with them anymore as Messi plays to rough :) she does spend time with them safely in here cage or behind end the screened door..

Just wondering who else has a Wilson and how old is the oldest chinchilla belonged to a member ...

Yes will ring the vet this morning again and see if they have a critical care solution I can give her.. She does seem to be eating again now just not the hard pellets yet and there's more poop there now...

I have read up a little and I've seen the same prognosis regarding the continued fillings and myself and partner have discussed this and seeing what she has been through over the last few days and the stress it's caused to her body we've agreed we wouldn't put her through another GA and the trauma of recovery so we think it would be kinder to put her to sleep if this happens again .

I'm praying by some fluke this is just a once off but I know she's on the older side and we have to be prepared ..

Thank you for moving my post and for responding...

She has always been a big girl but her weight has dropped to 400g now.. She is very active now and I will stop giving the raisins ( she hasn't eaten any since last night anyway) I do know rasins aren't a good idea I was just so desperate to get her to eat anything and I know with a sore mouth is have a better chance of her eating a soft raisin. I hope I didn't do much more harm :(

She has pooped today I seen at least 4 new poop pellets in the last hour an I believe she has started to eat the petal chin food mixture..

We've never had any health problem with her in the 8 years she's been with us and she is such a character :) she loves the cats and plays with them :) we Infact got black chin chin for company for her when we stopped letting her play with the cats ( Messi was getting too rough with them) and she nearly killed the black chinchilla :( thankfully he was ok but we had to give him back to breeder immediately .. Messi is a Wilson Chinchilla and as far as I know here in Ireland they are quite rare ..

I do hope she will come around from this I think she's a tough nut ;) the only other scare we had was months after we rescued her .. We didn't know she had been pregnant and she lost the first pup and the second was deformed it must have been a very traumatic experience for her but she was back to her normal self the same day and no GA was needed..

How often should I be syringe feeding ? Every 3-5 hours ?
