My bad, I was just following the breeders instructions  Makes me wonder why that breeder puts sunflower seeds in his supplement mixes....

I know I'm posting a lot but I'm so excited to find other chinchilla people :::grins::, in my area I often get asked "And what exactly is a chinchilla?" LOL. But I got my older chinchilla Stewart from a pet store so I never really knew his family history. I personally think he looks like a beige chinchilla especially now that he is getting freckles on his ears. His stomach is slightly lighter than the rest of his fur, not much, if that matters. I don't know I'd love to know if that's also how you guys would classify him!

You guys are SO helpful, I know it must be frustrating answering the same questions day by day. I think he's too young for his little stomach to handle the supplement, I just looked at everything in it, and there's things like sunflower seeds and etc. So I think I'm going to clean everything in his cage and try again without the supplement for today and see if there's any differences. Now that I think about it his poops are usually soft after supplement and hard again right before supplement time. I think he's finally used to my house though, every time I open his cage door he hops right in my hand lol. I look forward to building a strong bond with him, I know my other chinchilla was already probably 8 months old when I got him (Pet Store).

UPDATE I see no wet poops. But I feel like he is suddenly innactive. I don't know if its because he's nocturnal or what. But he seems uninterested in pellets but he eats the supplement, so I gave him a tad more. Does this sound normal?

Yes thank you for the help. My older chinchilla had it when I first got him, and I didn't think anything either. It went away and he never had the problem again. So maybe the stress of moving causing it isn't uncommon. But I'm going to wait for the breeder to call and watch him closely just in case.

I just left a voicemail for the breeder. He gave me a six month guarantee if anything goes wrong, but I'd be so upset if anything happens to the little guy.

Yes a breeder. I messaged him last night and asked, I'm going to call here soon. I have no way to weigh him so that worries me too. I'm unsure of the pellets because the breeder gave me a bag of pellets and supplements and didn't really explain what they where. As far as his behavior he's eating all of his food fine and hopping around the cage, and running in the wheel. Sometimes he hides behind the wheel, but I considered that a little normal sense they do sleep lol and I think that's just where he sleeps.

Hi I'm back, my seven week old baby has soft stool. Completely normal color, circular shaped, just soft. Hes on the same diet the breeder gave him except now he has Oxbox hay and not alfalfa. I don't know if its soft because he just literally weaned from his momma or what? Any input is appreciated ASAP. (My other chinchillas stool is still completely normal BTW, if that helps at all)

Cages / Re: Housing chins in a bedroom

I'm no expert but I used to have rabbits who where litter trained with their own room, and it was messy! If it's carpeted then it'll be torture to you. All the little poops, hay, and food spills will be impossible to clean up. And from my understanding they like to jump and climb, which is why they really need a cage with many levels. If it's a smaller hardwood flooring room, then I'd say as long as there's nothing they can chew on and hurt themselves, then go for it if you really want. I'd definitely leave the cage in there and have it open though. I follow "Mr. Bagel" on instagram and I'm pretty sure I've seen on posts that she lets her chinchilla roam the entire house all the time and she posts videos of him all over the house lol. Different things work for different owners I suppose.

Yes! Are you the main person that manages this forum? (Off topic, I know). It seems theirs not many chinchilla forums, which is strange to me.

Oh thank you for the information. Yeah I'm thinking of waiting another month and a half if all goes well before they can have long term time together so that the baby can grow. The breeder showed me both his parents and even grandparents, they where extremely huge compared to Stewart my other chinchilla. So I think the baby is going to be big enough to pull his own weight by then seeing as his parents are gigantic lol

Oh no! I haven't done anything bizare like putting them in the same cage. If that's what you're thinking. I just have done short spans of monitored play time. I asked the breeder and he told me that the baby will adapt to anything that my only issue will be my older chinchilla if that. And no, my cages aren't side by side. They're in the same room, not side by side though

Q & A / Bonding New Chinchilla with Old One
« on: February 08, 2015, 04:23:59 PM »
Hi I have a male two-three year old Chinchilla named Stewart (From the pet store sadly) and as of the sixth I went to a local breeder and got a baby chinchilla (My boyfriend named him Diesel), he is six weeks old and one day! There are in separate cages for now.

First Night - I put them in a neutral territory (The Bathroom), and the baby hid in the corner and Stew didn't really pay much attention to him for the most part. But then towards the end Stew went up and sniffed him and mounted him, which I read is normal because of dominance, but I stopped it because the baby is so small I don't want him to get hurt. Afterwards I put them in each others cages for a half hour then swapped them back.

Second Night - During out time the baby ventured out, they both did their own thing and ignored each other for quite awhile. I put out dust bathe in the middle of the floor and they took their turns. Towards the end I heard them bicker a little bit towards each other, that's when I ended play time and  put them in each others cage for a half hour again then put them back in their own spots.

I'm thinking that this is progress seeing as I have had no fights yet. Am I doing things correctly? Do you have any tips? What do you guys think?
