the saftey isnt the biggest issue. all the chins are on ground level in a completley closed off room. even the vents are on the celing and we have a play pen around his cage so when he does get out, he doesnt get very far...but the little fatso doesnt fit thru anymore so we are working on building breeding/birthing cages for our other chins!

thanks for the help!

I have one little boy who lives with his mommy still he is only 2 weeks old and has just discovered how to get out of the cage. the bars are relativly close together and we are not sure how he is sqeezing out but have fixed it for now.

what type of cages do you use to house the mommies and babies?? we are trying to purchase a cage specifically for housing the mom when she gets close to giving birth.

any comments will help!!

North East USA / white male for sale in MD
« on: April 20, 2008, 06:36:39 PM »
Q-Tip is a sweet little white male, who may end up being mosaic a little bit. He loves to be held and sure is a love bug! ::chinhappy::

It will be very hard for me to give up this little bugger ::sadtears:: but it needs to be done for we cant keep all our chins.

Q-Tip would come with food, hay, a toy, and if needed a cage (for additional money of course!)
However, we will not ship!!

Visit our website to see pictures and learn more about the little guy!

General Chat / Re: Help moving my chinchillas
« on: April 16, 2008, 05:59:46 PM »
sounds like a lot i went through when getting me 2nd chin...

first of all I would highly suggest getting a new cage with a tray in the bottom, from experience it makes cleaning a ton easier. also, my chins have this habit of 'flicking' their poop outside the cage. i know sounds nasty, but what we did was to put plexy glass around the bottom of the cage, not too high so that the air still circulates and it doesnt get too hot. maybe about 2 inches high.  this prevents the dialy vacumming that would need to be done.

to keep the area clean i put down a clear mat that can easily be wipped off and picked up as needed. i only vaccuum after my five chins about once, twice a week with all the other precautions, and they all live in our bedroom actually (and i am a neat freak!!!!) so if that fits with your schedule its not bad at all.

for me and my chins playtime in the living room, or any other room is difficult. i live in a very open house with a lot if things to get in trouble with. the only place my chins are allowed to run is the bathroom, which is stilll romey enough to get them the proper exercise, bouncing off the walls and all. just be sure the floor and tub are dry and all is off the floor. and watch them, the toliet seems to be a perfect height for them to jump on and get hurt!! and yes, a small pet carrier shouldnt be too hard to getyour girls into.

i would, if decided to move, first get the new cage and wait about a week, then move them to the living room. just to make the change less stressful on your babies.

hope this helps and if you have any questions feel free to ask!!!

actually we had the same problem.  What we did was to put an aircraft nut on it. This was so that no matter which way they ran, the screw and nut where not undoing themselves. Remember that saying righty tighty lefty losey, well basically charlie was run to the left, and undoing his screw everynight making tons of noise. We also have our chins in our room, for it is the coolest room for them.

Hope this helps!! If you dont understand ask a hardware person...they may be able to help!!!!

« on: April 12, 2008, 08:38:44 AM »
actually she loves her male, Ty. they get along wonderfully and have been together for over a year. I dont think it is that. she just had a baby, 4 days ago, but still grinds her teeth.

im sure its not b/c of the male, for now they are separate to prevent back breeding.
