Memorials / Re: How do I do it?
« on: July 03, 2008, 11:49:15 AM »
The appointment is made.
My son, Gandolf and I are going to the vets today to end Gandolf's suffering. We took alot of pictures while we played with him last night. He was so exhausted. He is so weak from not being able to eat.

My vet told me all we needed to do was to extract his insisors and he would still have his molars to chew. This totally didn't make sense to me. It's his molars that is causing the whole problem.

I would still just be putting off the inevitiable.... and making Gandolf suffer longer in the process....
I'll post some pictures later.

Sorry, I had to take a minute.
I am putting my chin down today.
I want you to know that I can feel your sadness.
We are all beside you in your grieving.
May peace come over you soon.

My heart is with your during this hardsome time. May peace fill your soul after you grieve. Know deep in your heart that you did nothing wrong, it was just her time. We don't know when it's our time, it just is.
Take care of your yourself and your chinny.

Memorials / How do I do it?

First i want to thank all of you who helped my with my chin. Gandolf, we have had him for 4 years now.... Now.... we have just found out he has malocclusion and I must make the choice to put him down.

I spent last night cleaning his little paws because he can't. I have bought everything known to help him chew. (thank you for the advice on the raisins. He tried so hard to gnaw on that piece of bark.) I have taken him to the vet every two - three months for the past year to get his teeth trimmed because he stopped chewing. He is slowly loosing weight.... and I can't do ANYTHING to help him........

Gandolf is my son's chinny. He saved up his money to buy him. He wanted a chinchilla since he was 8. Now he's 17 and has to put down his first and only real pet he ever owned....

If I knew what i know now, i don't think we would of bought Gandolf. I have lost sleep taking care of this little creature, this little fuzzy fur ball... the cutest thing I have ever came across. I love how they are so timid, but then has a fiery side to them. I love to watch him eat his treats with his little hands grasping to help him tear the raisin apart....How Gandolf loves his boy...how he stays on my son's shoulder while walking around just prancing back and forth from one shoulder to another.

GOD, I AM GOING TO MISS MY LITTLE RASCLE!!!  His spunk is so much part of this family...

How am I going to find the strength to let the vet put him down.... and never be able to hold him again, play with him again, watch him again....take care of him again.

My son and I have only one chinny. He fell in love with them in the 4th grade when his teacher brought her's to class. He has written many articles in school on chinnys. He even made a replica out of styrofoam balls and pipe cleaners. We got our Gandolf 4 years ago. I have been on the site many times to get a working understanding of chinnys. I finally decided to join the forums. Over the past few years this site has been a wonderful tool in the world of chinnys, thanks !!! I have wished we would of also bought his sibling. He seems so alone in the big cage. A playmate would of been great for him. I don't have room in my house for multiple cages so one is all we get.

My son has been trying to make a maze out of cardboard to see if we can get Gandy to run the maze... the funny part was when he just jumped over the walls to get to the end. LOL

Our only other pet is a border collie. We did have a red-bellied toad for 4 years though...I still can't believe it lived that long.

I will say the pet store knows us well. We didn't get gandolf from the pet store, we got him from a private breeder. she kept them all out in a barn. Lots of cages with lots of chinnys.

Health / Re: teeth growing chin not chewing

I forgot to add that my vet is the only one in town who takes care of chin's. He also takes care of all the ones that are sold at the pet stores. I think he did mention the malocclusion the first time I took Gandolf to him, but hasn't mentioned it since.

Thank you all for all your information. I did go and look up the malocclusion. ::cry222::: I really hope this is not the case. I am going to get an xray to see if it's the molars. Until then, I will try to rub the raisin on his chews.

Health / Re: Possible hair ring?
« on: May 22, 2008, 08:42:41 PM »
My Gandolf got a hair ring earlier this year. He is 4 though. It's our first experience of him getting one. I just noticed one day that is penis was sticking out and his fur was filthy from him peeing on himself. further investigation lead me to see the hair ring. I carefully cut it off. You could tell he was in distress, just not acting himself. In a few hours, he was playing like normal. I felt bad because it took me a few days to actually "look" at why his penis was out. My chin had to suffer until I could figure it out. I felt so bad, but at least he recovered very well.

As for your being to young I don't know. I know mine was doing his business pretty young... and all the time. I can't remember at what age in months when he be became hormonial.

Health / teeth growing chin not chewing
« on: May 22, 2008, 08:31:48 PM »
Hey all, My chin is 4 years old now. He has decided not to continue chewing on bark or the lava rocks to keep his teeth from growing to long. I have been taking him every few months to the vet to get the teeth cut down. Has anyone else had this experience?
Can I reteach him to knaw. I don't want to keep exposing him to sedation if I don't need to and I don't want to get his teeth removed. Which is the vets reccomendation.
