patches of hair...
« on: April 30, 2009, 10:55:41 AM »

Hi everyone.
I have been finding patches of hair randomly around maisy's cage, but i cant see any spots on her where hair is missing. is it normal for chinchillas to shed hair and whiskers once in awhile?

::silly::  Is she the only chinchilla in the cage, or does she have a cagemate?

::silly::  The fur of a chinchilla is so thick, unless you take out a really large bunch of fur, you will not notice where it came from on the chinchilla.

Is there any one else in the home other than you?

Are there any other pets?

Usually, a chinchilla does not shed enough fur for it to be noticeable in the cage ... unless someone has tried to catch her.  Chinchillas have a self-defense ... they can allow their fur to slip, should they be captured ... then the predator ends up with only a mouth full of fur.

shed hair and whiskers
Are her whiskers gone or shorter than normal?

I've basically just noticed some whiskers laying on the floor of her cage sometime....not many. i'm the only one that handles her and i never grab her. maybe she's getting them caught in her wheel or in the cage....im not too worried about it. she's still very healthy. i was just wondering if i should be concerned but it sound like i have nothing to worry about. thanks

::silly::  What type of exercise wheel are you using for your chin?  Can you post a picture?

Tuffs of fur I do not worry about, unless there is allot of it, as for the whiskers ... that concerns me.

Chewing whiskers is a sign of nervousness ... if this is the case, next she will probably start chewing fur.  Bad habit to get into and can cause medical problems.

If the whiskers are falling out ... that could be due to the diet.

What brand of food do you feed her?

What treats do you give her?
