Help I'm getting Peed on!
« on: March 20, 2010, 08:56:16 PM »

I just rescued 3 more chins. a 2 year old ebony and her 1 year old kits (not sure what their colors would be called) one looks like my Black velvet but her belly is also a greyish black and the other looks like a VERY dark grey and her belly is the same color. Ebony Mom was bred with a standard a year year ago.

just a note on the rescue situation: a lady had 7 female chinchillas all in one cage together and she has a disability that is causing her to lose her mobility  so she couldn't care for them anymore :::(((  she put them up for adoption on a local website thing. I emailed her an went to pick up the ebony and ended up taking the daughters too!  ::)

the darker female is living with my cousin now, she is very sweet and likes to be held, petted and comes right up to the cage to get attention. but mom and the other baby are with me and my other chins. Mom is a little timid and barks when i touch her but once I have her she is ok and will just lay on me like she is just wants to cuddle. The daughter on the other hand is very aggessive and barks when you walk by the cage and sprays pee on you just for walking by....and don't even think about putting your hand in there!! I've had her for only about 8 hours and while i was adding food and hay i got peed on! or walking by i got peed on....just to name a couple of times today....  :o

i would like some help understanding why they might be doing this and why the one pees on people just for walking by, it's not like i'm trying to pick her up or anything I have only held her 2 times today. One was at the lady's house to put her in my cage,  and the second was to check her gender and move her to an actual cage instead of the carry cage they were in. but she seems to hate everyone. she peed on me about 15 times today ::beeker:: ! I'm also looking for advice on what I can do to help her not be so afraid and to stop peeing on everyone. ANY advice/ thoughts/concerns/help would be greatly appreciated!!! thank you everyone in advance.

I am so sorry!  I hate getting peed on!!  She is doing it because she is afraid. It is the same as a scared dog growling at you as soon as it sees you.  She sees you coming and does the only thing she can think of to stop you and that is shoot her pee.  Ok here is the hard part.... Of course you are going to be grossed out and immediately pull your hand back or get out of the line of fire. This teaches her if she pees you go away.  Which only makes her pee worse.  You are just going to have to train her the same way you would any other chinchilla only maybe with one rain gear on.  :D  You are going to have to just plan on getting pee on you and taking it.

Here is an article on how to tame a chinchilla: http://www.huggablepets.com/huggablepets/friends.shtml
Follow these directions but be sure that you never pull away if she pees.  If anything move closer in a non-threatening way.  Never leave a bonding session just after she has peed at you.  You want her to learn that peeing in ineffective in making you leave her alone.

No that's right Jamie, pee or no pee we will be friends. LOL  :D

Must have took me 6 months to get my Leona to stop spraying me. She hated me for so long, she'd bark, spray and stay as far from me as she could.
I have had her now for 5 years, and we have come to an understanding. I don't fuss with her unless I have too, and I just let her come to me if she wants something.
When I do have to handle her she'll just try and push my hands out of the way, but will let me with out any fuss now.
Funny thing is though she's so cooperative when she has kits. As soon as they are born I take them out and weigh them, and she'll clean her self up and wait for me to change her blanket and put the kits back. She trusts me with all her heart, she just likes some things her own way. ::nod::

Oh and they are some cute. The second picture could be my Leona, she's a med ebony. ::wub::

Not at all, some are just spitie too. Females in particular can be very Territorial, and adamant.

My Leona has had the best, she just likes things her own way. ;)

I don't think they were abused just not handled! the sisters were born with the lady and he had them almost a year! but i have some news on the spraying:

I had a friend bring her 17 year old daughter by tuesday night and she was playing with some of the chins, I forgot to tell her about the one that was spraying so I went into the room to tell her and she was scratching this little one through the bars and asked if she could open the cage, I was hesitant but said yes, to my surprise the little girl climbed on her outstreached hand and wanted to play! she has not taken treats from my hand either, but this girl offered her one after putting her back in her cage and she took it! I decided to let her go home with my friend and her daughter, I'm not sure what is up with that but she has had her for a few days now and there has been no spraying, no barking, no running away!  ::dancingspot::
she takes treats, wants the girl to pick her up, runs all around and climbs on the girl! It was amazing, apparently she just didn't like me LOL. but I know she has a good home and this 17 year old girl will take great care of her!!!! I just can't believe that, me with all the chins and experience and the chin hates me! rofl

Yes that is funny, but I sure know that feeling. May daughter Laura has never had any problems handling Leona. She has come right to from the day we got her.
I always said she hated me  :D
