safest way to pick up a pregnant chin
« on: July 25, 2010, 06:28:27 AM »

guys, if fluffy doesn't give birth by mid-morning tomorrow, i'll have to take her to the vets. now, she doesn't like to be picked up and i have of course been avoiding picking her up as she's pregnant.

but of course if i need to take her, i'll have to pick her up and put her into a carrier. what is the safest way to hold a pregnant girl?

If she is calm enough I scoop up under them supporting their whole body by the bottom

Why do you have to take her if she doesn't deliver by noon?
How over due is she?

Oh and maybe put a treat in the carrier and hold it up for her to get in herself.

she's not overdue but she had slight vaginal bleeding yesterday morning and the vet said, if she doesn't deliver within 48 hours it's a good idea to have her checked out.

but, i can feel movement in her tummy as usual and she seems perfectly fine. i think i will just go in tomorrow morning and have a word with the vet, her due date is tomorrow.

it was a very small amount of blood - she kept checking her bits and then grabbed a chew and left bloody paw marks on it - that's the only reason i could see there was blood.

i checked her bits today - she helpfully sat so i had a full view and it looks normal, no swelling, no blood, no discoloured fur.

i would prefer not to take her in. i think they will say if she's behaving normally, just keep an eye on her.

i did have a word with the vet and she told me to give her 24 hours and if nothing happens, bring her in. she gave birth the next morning :D i did take her in two hours after the baby was born though just to check there were no more babies in her tummy (she had triplets the first time) but it was all ok :)

thanks debbie! she's very precious. it's unbelievable how lively she is. the day she was born, it took me a while to catch her to weigh her because she was running around like a little monkey! they have a fleece snug with a heart entrance, the bottom of the entrance is about two inches off the ground... she jumps onto the bottom of the entrance and into the snug!!!
