My mom had an interesting idea. She recommended putting flour around the food and water dishes. It might leave paw prints behind. I wouldn't pile it up or anything. Not sure if it would try to eat it.

As far as finding an animal like this there are sadly no guarantees you'll eliminate every possible place. I remember an interesting story about a ferret that ended up inside of a box that was returned at Walmart!

Start with any place that rents tools or plumbing equipment nearby, do some searches on google for camera plumbing snake rental, tool rentals, if you still come up short call some local plumbers and ask them if they have one or knows of anyone that might that you could rent or use. Explain the situation. Maybe you can get a good deal.
You might be able to use a regular plumbing snake and attach a small camera and light to it. (Yes, you risk damaging the camera or other things) You could set the camera to record a video and then see it turns out. Be careful not to damage anything inside the ducts or the fan. That's probably what I would do if it were me but I'm also pretty handy with kludging things.

Disclaimer: I don't know what might all could go wrong and if you mess it up don't blame me!

Oh yea you could of missed her while looking. And they really can get through anything. My chin can squeeze through a space that is tall enough for just my hand when flat. Flour is a very good idea. You can call plumbing companies to see if they have those snakes.

You said you had two chins, are they both missing?

no dad is still in the cage,and im worrying about him they have been togather for 4 years,im just hoping she is in my house somewhere and her and the babies are safe,but ive seen no sign of her since tuesday nite.

I just found her next to her cage!but know I have a new problem did she have her babies in the heating vent!

I wish I could answer your question. She could have lost a bit of weight from the incident so it could be really hard to tell.

Ive never had a chinchilla so i don't know how to tell if shes had them I'm so happy shes out but now the worry about the babies are there.

Yay! I was worried about you and your chin all day! Do you know how far a long she was? Does she look any different? I've heard that when some chins are far along you can feel the babies. They will not be right in the middle of her tummy like humans. They will be kinda of on each side of her stomach, past her ribs. Be very careful and gentle when feeling it.

Breeding and babies are really out of my zone, but I'm wondering if you should add any pedialyte to her water or anything to make sure she is getting enough nutrients, especially bc she's been gone. I do know that if you want her to drink more water, add a little bit of sugar free apple juice to it so she can be hydrated

This discussion continued in another thread. It does not appear any babies were born since the mother's nipples were not long enough to have been nursing.
